“Not sure if I would go back.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013 via mobile

I visited here last Sunday afternoon with my husband and baby. I had previously visited here last year with a large group and the food was very tasty so I was looking forward to my lunch. The food was just ok..... I had a potato cake with beef cheek for starters. I couldn't taste the beef just the potato but I got a mouthful of either star anise or caraway seeds when I bit into the relish - not very pleasant! The main course came out literally 5 minutes after the starters were finished - far too quick. The main course was tasty but nothing extraordinary. The garlic potatoes served with the main were watery and the potatoes had gone to mush. The dessert was very nice. My main gripe was when the bill came. My 10 month old had a baby bowl which consisted if 2 scoops of mashed potato and gravy - they charged is €3 for this!! Never in any hotel or restaurant have we been charged for a couple of scoops of veg for our baby. When I said it to the waitress she just shrugged her shoulders. In this economical climate it just looks mean to charge for a small baby when 2 adults had a 4 course meal. It's something like this that would make me think twice before I would return to a restaurant. It just doesn't look good......

Called to Purple Onion on a whim while passing. The Pub/Restaurant is comfy and welcoming. There was a choice a three different menus with a good selection. Staff friendly and attentive. We both ate off early bird menu which was good value and delicious. Will be back

“Great food & wine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

When i visit Longford we usually take a visit to the purple onion for dinner. Food here is excellent there is also a wide variety of wine to choose from. Would recommend you book a table here as it is small and usually booked up. Great food and super staff. PS If the pork is on the menu - get it!
