“This is how all hotels should be!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2010

We stayed for 2 nights at the Vienna Woods. On arrival the first impression is inspiring with a private tree lined entrance and drive. On check in the receptionist was efficient and attentive, and was genuinely interested in talking to is a friendly manner. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade our room, if we wanted to book dinner and if we needed any information to assist with our stay in Cork. The hotel is a beautiful old country house with a modern section as well. We found the whole building spotlessly clean and tidy, the older sections of the building had lots of charm and period features, with an overall really nice homely comfortable feel. It was a refreshing change from some of the over designed modern hotels we have in this country! Our room was a decent size and the bedding was of good quality, needless to say we slept well both nights of our stay. Breakfast was excellent, the food was hot, and there was great choice. The Breakfast staff were spritely and friendly which is always nice to see in the morning. We took a walk around the grounds on our first morning and like the interior they are very well kept, neat, and not over manicured. The grounds are heavily wooded and give a secluded timeless feel. The one thing that really made our stay different from other hotels were the staff. Every time we met a manager or staff member, even in the corridor they always smiled and said hello. It really complimented the homely feel and atmosphere of the building. We ate in the hotel on one evening. My partner had the Irish Angus roast beef which looked great, it disappeared off her plate pretty fast. It came with mashed potatoes which were divine, really creamy and buttery and a selection of fresh vegetables in a side dish. Being my predictable usual self I had the burger which was excellent, it was really meaty and juicy, and the bun was fresh, I asked for bacon and cheddar in mine and got a generous portion, and the most important test of a good burger, it held shape all the way to the last bite! The chips were hot and drinks were promptly delivered. Our server was friendly as expected, and checked on us several times. Cork is a great city too, it was our first and certainly not our last time to visit. We wanted a relaxing, nothing much to do break from our usual daily lives and got exactly what we hoped for. If you have not stayed here I would definitely recommend this hotel.

The location of the hotel is great and it really looks like you're in the Vienna woods. I loved the design and interior of the hotel - with fresh flowers everywhere.
We had a room that faced the back side of the hotel with some aircondition unit humming away. It wasn't very loud, but I wish hotels (generally) were more aware that there're people who actually HATE humming noise.
We had dinner at the hotel twice and unfortunately the food is only average. The service is very good, the dining room lovely - but what's on the plate is - well - average. The first day I had a hamburger that was absolutely tasteless. The second day I decided to order pasta with Gorgonzola sauce - every beginner can cook spaghetti and melt the cheese, one would expect. But I was disappointed again. The noodles were overcooked, some vegetables were thrown into the sauce which cannot have contained much Gorgonzola at all, not that I could taste it anyway. Very sad, because like I said, the ambience was really lovely - and a good cuisine would really make a big difference.

Thanks for taking the time to share your views on your stay with us. May of our guests notice our fresh flower arrangements, we are lucky to have our own in house (a very talented) florist. I agree that hotels sometimes have ambient noises that can be distracting. I notice this myself while travelling on business. A tip for you next time you are staying in a hotel.. Just ask at reception and there is no reason why you shouldn’t get a quieter room on a higher floor. Hotels in general are more than willing to do a “room move” as we call it. A good hotel will also allocate you a quieter room if you request so when making your reservation.

I note your thoughts regarding our menu. I would like to reassure you we are currently developing a new food concept at the hotel which we are all very excited about. Our new menu, along with redesigned food preparation methods will soon have us delivering a much higher quality food offering.

I do sincerely hope that you revisit Fitzgerald’s Vienna Woods hotel in the future.

I had read so many great reviews about this place so i was hopeful. Very helpful staff however our initial room overlooked the carpark. They had also put us on the same floor as a wedding party so our entire first night was ruined by other guests running up and down the corridor, swearing, singing, slamming doors until 6am. We phoned reception several times but they were only able to express their apologies.
In the morning I decided to give them one more chance before booking another hotel. I went to reception and told them of my awful night and requested to be moved. The staff were great, very apologetic, admitted we had been placed in the middle of the wedding party by mistake. They moved us to the back of the hotel, to the upper floor, where it was peaceful, quiet and I had the best 3 nights sleep of my life!
We only ate in the restaurant the night we arrived but the food was good, part. the seafood chowder.
The location of the hotel means a car is really required - its too far to walk into Cork and the bus services aren't great.
Its definately a little dated but it was clean and fairly well maintained - although the sheets arent changed each day and our room certainly wasnt hoovered.

We... my 2 bothers and their wives (6) stayed at the Vienna Woods Property in July. We rented a "villa" on the grounds which had 4 bedrooms, each with their own full bath and a kitchen and living area. Out the front was a lovely patio with 4 chairs, umbrella and table. These are self catering units but still come nicely equipped. All we needed was to buy some paper towels, soaps and a few dish cloths. The fridge is small but ample. There is a microwave, oven, stove-top and dishwasher along with a washer/dryer combo unit. The villa was very clean and comfortable. There are two bedrooms on the main floor and 2 upstairs. The upper ones had a TV, skylights that opened for a breeze and ours had a couch for sitting. One small issue was the lack of water pressure. Hate to nit-pick but it was pretty weak.
The villa is located at the 'top' of the property which means it is a short hike from the main building up hill. There are about 8 units I think and they look pretty much the same. They are close together but still far enough for privacy. We did meet some nice people along the way.
We were there for a wedding at the hotel and that turned out to be a wonderful gathering. The place was nicely decorated and all the staff were ready to please. They would come around at dinner and ask if everything was OK and if we needed more of anything. The bar staff were courteous and efficient. Once the wedding was over in the main hall the staff made sure we knew there was a resident bar to continue our visit with all the family and friends. We did stay up until the birds were singing and never once heard a staff member quibble about all of us staying up so long. They were in fact encouraging us to stay and chat as they knew we were from Canada and don't get to see our Irish family very often. We did finally sleep and just made it at the last for breakfast. They were starting to put it away but when they saw us come in they did everything they could to keep what was left warm and available for us. We really appreciated that.

All in all, this was a terrific hotel with lovely grounds, good food, great service, better that average accommodations and overall a wonderful holiday place.
We also found that is is central to Cork, Douglas, Monkstown and Passage and a short drive to most areas of South East Cork County. Just know you can not walk to very much but there is a lovely river walk across the road to a small town. 1 mile. There is not much there but I would say the service station - petrol station- was great for the morning coffee, fresh baked goods, a sandwich deli, hot food area and generally things you may need to fill the fridge and cupboard for your stay. Very new, clean and friendly.

I can't say we had a bad experience to tell you about at all at the Vienna Woods Hotel and would definitely return and recommend this to anyone going to stay in the Cork area.

WE loved, it.

Many thanks for your comprehensive review. We were all delighted to read your comments, and are glad you had a good time during your visit to Ireland and found the Villas comfortable.

I note your observation in relation to the water pressure, and should mention that our Holiday Villas are the same as a domestic house, in that they have their own individual water supply from the mains, unlike a hotel room where the water in showers etc are feeding from an internal pressurised system. I have mentioned this to our Maintenance Manager and he will monitor the water pressures in the Villas to see that they don’t fall to an unsatisfactory level.

Family get togethers and weddings are some of the best and memorable times in our lives so it gives us great satisfaction to know that you travelled all the way from Canada and had that experience at Fitzgerald’s Vienna Woods Hotel.

Please let us know if you are coming to Cork again, we would love to welcome you back.

Regards
Jason, Management & Staff

We got married here new years eve and i could not fault the vienna woods. Between Mary Ann and Michael they did everyhting we asked of them and on the day everything went to plan. I had been stressing as i am sure every bride does but it went to perfection. A lot of our friends have paid compliments to the hotel. The hotel also looked fab for christmas so this added to the whole ambience. Definitely get married here!!

Well on first impressions this has a lot more going for it than many so called 4* properties. Lovely ambience and peaceful elegance in the old part of the property where the bar and small cosy and extremely romantic nooks and crannies of the common areas are situated. Time appears to stand still or roll back amidst period features and comfy saeting in the bar area and it is a temptation to linger there all night. Service here is excellent with chirpy , enthusiastic and attentive staff who fall over themselves to please. Food is of excellent quality with original and appealing preparation even in the bar area.Value is excellent and asked to check bill as it seemed too low !!
Dee on the reception desk is charming and informative without any of the rush and offhand manner often experienced and at once you are aware you are in a small family run hotel where pride and care is the norm
Rooms are a little dated but spotless, excellent new beds(not zipped together floopy affairs).Spacious bathrooms with excellent showers and attention to detail.Decor is honest yet repro with good neutral colour scemes.Sleep quality is divine with zero noise and rapid room service and daily change of bedlinen(Now thats a first).
So what does it lack?MMmm...the woods! So inviting and one would expect a network of pathways or at least a few walks yet there are none which is a shame for such a lovely setting. The seclusion is excellent though andit is really handy for Cork City, Fota Park ,House and Arboretum with quick access to the motorway system. Also no leisure facilities though with so much to do on the doorstep not really a problem.
Make sure you visit this hotel and you will return again and again and wont be disappointed by the teriffic value, good service and charm of the place.

I loved this place for a 3 star hotel. I was really impressed. I cant believe how nice the staff were. We stayed for 1 night and got an amazing rate. I would return here again although it is slightly dated decor it suited the hotel and i have to say it was just spotless.
