“Not what it was made out to be on the website!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel for one night during our tour around Iceland and we looking forward to a little bit of luxury staying at the Geysir Hotel but that was not to be!

Unfortunately the hotel is very dated and in need of much repair to the reception and several other areas, not to mention the 'hot tubs' which were located out the back of a closed gym and empty pool. They were dirty and filled with luke warm water with no views at all. Needless to say we didn't go into them and decided to visit Fontana Spa which is about 20 minutes away and then ate at The Linden Restaurant which is just next door to the Spa and well worth it (but I would ring and book to get in as it can be busy at times)

Our room was in the 'wing' of the hotel which was about 10 minutes walk from the reception and in what seemed to be a building used for business conferences. It was clean and comfortable and the one thing that saved the hotel from being a much worse rating was that we were directly across from the Geysir site so we could enjoy them from our bedroom window as the light fell over the mountains. I wouldn't recommend this hotel and think you would be better off staying in one of the neighboring villages.

Oh and before I forget I would concur with some of the other reviews as a last note to say that breakfast was good but not worth staying here for!

Thank you for you review.

I´m very sorry to hear that your stay was not as you expected. We are a small family company and we really strive to make all our guests feel as comfortable as we can. We are not part of a large hotel chain and we are in the country side of Iceland. We have been renewing a lot of things since your visit such as the restaurant, the shop, the hotel rooms, the hot tubs (new spa area in spring 2014) but of course these are all repairs that has been happening after your stay. So I´m hoping if you'll return to Iceland that you will give it another try since a lot has changed since your stay. Furthermore new hotel is being built connected to the restaurant and it will be a 4 star hotel, so you'll get the luxury stay if you'll return.
The hot tubs were though at the time of your stay cleaned every single day but they have started to show since the were outdated but they were always clean, clean is something we have always put at first rule for everything. But these hot tubs have been removed and new are coming in spring.

Thank you again for your review and we took it under consideration and have been renewing since your visit :)

All our best from Geysir.

great location, over the road from the springs
pool was empty
saunas were dirty
The food was amazing .. BUT 3 course ... 3 hours we sat and no one came ove and told us they were sorry , forget a free drink or a discount ... just sit and wonder !
yes it was busy but 2 cold starters took an hour to come out !
reindeer pate was boring and i wanted to be wowed.
The Whale steak was amazing& the steak was the best I have ever eaten its just a shame the wait was a joke.
The room was nice, more like the feel of a kids camp that a luxury hotel but oh well they were clean and ok.

The breakfast was the best of the trip but it would be nice to get in at 7 and hit the road.

Food & rooms defo too pricey but thats iceland for you ... i had worse

staff were lovely though ( a female waitress with blond tied back hair and a male with glasses , slim build with facial hair )

Room Tip: go for the cabins

Thank you for your review.

Yes we have had trouble with the pool and since you stayed we have removed the pool and building a new spa with hot tubs, sauna and relaxing room and massage facility. We cleaned the hot tubs though every day and put fresh water in it but they were starting to show because of massive use and then of course we are renewing.
Good to hear that you enjoyed the meal but the waiting is horrible to hear about. I hope you'll return and we´ll show you the excellent service we always aim to have but again very sorry for the waiting.
All our very best from Hotel Geysir.

I have just stayed in this hotel for two nights but was very disappointed:
The swimming pool was empty
The hot tubs were empty
Had a 20 minute wait for hot water for the shower
Brought starters for dessert in the restaurant
On site gym - closed

The only saving grace about this place is that the staff where friendly, the lady recommended Fontana spa 20 minutes away, defiantly worth a visit.

We would not stay here again.

We dined at the restaurant and two of us got the lamb chops and one got the cod. There was very little meat on the plate and we were still hungry after this meal. 4700 kr. for a few bites of lamb is outrageous and this is definitely a tourist trap. The cod was fine and was a proper portion. The service was nothing special and we as everyone else in the restaurant had to wait long for the food. We had children who got nothing to do during this long wait.

We liked
Amazing position a minutes walk from active Geysirs
Nice (but pricey) restaurant with geysirs visible (just) from the window. (I actually prefered it before they refurbished it when I stayed two years ago)
Spacious comfortable cabins.
Hot water takes 10 mins to arrive in the bathroom from the hot spring! (I liked this some may not!)

We did not like.
Pool now only open 1pm to 8pm ..... two years ago it was 24/7 so swims before breakfast or after dinner were possible (not anymore)
Being given rooms about 100yds apart in spite of requesting rooms close to each other when booking.
Not being allowed breakfast at 7.30pm when we had to make an 8pm start, not even an offer of a roll and a coffee ... very inflexible. (they said if we were a coach party they would do it but they wouldn't put them selves out just for us! (that did not make us feel too good)

Overall ... its OK but don't expect perfection.

Hotel Geysir is a great ocation for lots of reasons but most of all it's because when you stay here you are just a five minute walk from several active geysers and the greatest is Stokkur which erupts every 8 to 10 minutes. Sometimes you might get three eruptions together and sometimes you'll have to wait a little longer but it is a fascinating experience and almost entirely unpredictable despite the constant bubbling and boiling. The hotel caters for lots of different visitor types- there's a good quality restaurant (slightly expensive) but with a good range of chef's specialities, there's a brasserie and a cheaper snack bar. It has a huge gift shop (with both good and tacky offers) and an exhibition. The countryside around is good for walking with great views from some of the easier slopes. As with most places in Iceland, drinks are pricey so it's worth going easy on the alcohol but the natural beauty of the landscape completely compensates. Free Wi Fi is available in the Reception area but difficult to receive elsewhere. There are several accommodation options but the cabins provide the best all-round offer. They're not luxurious but they are comfortable and give a sense of privacy if you are trying to get away from the crowds which sometimes descend. If you are going to spend just one night out of Reykyavik, I recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Try to get a cabin facing away from the complex and you'll get a great view thrown in.

Great location. Cabin clean and comfortable. Dinner - lovely food but service very very slow and fried fish cold which spoiled what could have been a lovely meal. Waited an hour for a cold starter (meant to be cold) and a further hour for a cold main course that should have been hot.
