“good northern lights viewing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

we stayed here just the one night on the icelandair northern lights tour, we got the distinct impression though that if you booked this hotel yourself you got a better deal, we looked at the hotel on the internet and saw the modern decor but that we feel is reserved for private customers as is the "included breakfast" the room we had although warm and comfortable was well past its sell by date. The position of the hotel is perfect if the northern lights happening to be performing as it is miles from anywhere. The night we stayed there were only 3 other couples in the hotel but a couple of things would make think twice about staying there when it was busy, there were quite a number of signs reminding people about quite, i expect people may get a little giddy with drink watching the northern lights late at night in the hot tub the other thing was that there is only one kettle for the use of ALL the guests in the hotel and the only way to fill this kettle is to bring it back to the room and take it back to boil, for us this wasn't a problem as only one other couple wanted to use it but if lots of people are wanting a quick cuppa it could take awhile, i know its a little petty but best to know, still a very comfortable hotel with great views just could do better

This location is very quiet and perfect for northern light visualisation ! No light polution. The rooms are very basic but clean. Only some "muffy" smell in the bathroom but nothing bad. Good to know : ask for a room in tghe frrnt part, there are some totally renewed and very nice rooms, but I think there are a little more expensive. Cosy bar, a some "cool athmosphere" restaurant where the food and kitchen is really perfect ! Nice outdoor wihrlpool. We had a very nice stay here !

Room Tip: If you want to make the stay perfect ask for a new room in the front part of the hotel. The photos o...

I really liked my stay at Hekla. We had a bit of an issue at check in (basically there wasnt enough staff for our group), but overall, it was really wonderful! The food at the restaurant was VERY good. I had the trout, with lobster soup. I have never had fish that good before.

The rooms were very clean, but aren't really soundproof. I remember that I accidentally set my alarm incorrectly, but I ended up waking up from other people in the hall. It was a blessing in disguise because I originally wanted to be awake about 20minutes prior. But do keep in mind, that the hallways aren't exactly soundproof.

I like how they do the wakeup calls for the Northern Lights as well! It's quite dark outside, and you can even walk outside to the hottubs and watch them from there. I didn't do that (too cold), but I did have a nice view from right outside on the grass. It was beautiful!

I do wish that they did a better job at sanding the ice paths though. I actually slipped outside at night, not badly, but enough for me to comment on it and said "heads up".

Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and would definitely go back.

Stayed here for only 1 night in Feb 2014. It's a lodge style hotel, but perfectly comfortable and clean. The room had lovely views over the Icelandic countryside.

We ate dinner in the restaurant. We were impressed with the chef, the food was good, but rather pricey even for Iceland. The hotel is miles from anywhere so I guess they can charge a premium. Another downside was that breakfast as not available before 8am, not so handy when you have to leave at 7.30.

We unfortunately did not see the northern lights as it was cloudy all night, but I can imagine it is the perfect location to view them from, should they appear, as it is in the middle of nowhere with very little light pollution.

My wife and I stayed here end of February for 1 night. We booked a loft suite through the hotel's own website. Waw, was this a well-designed and beautifully decorated room! The sleeping area had 2 large, separate beds made up as one. It was separated from the spacious sitting room which featured a desk with AC-outlets, a chair, a small table and a comfortable couch from where the flat-screen TV could be watched. The TV can be switched 180° to watch it from the bed. The huge bathroom had some moody lighting for those that love that wellness thing. Regarding the food served in the restaurant: the breakfast was at par with other Icelandic hotels of the same standard, with dough provided to bake your own pancakes. If a group has reached the buffet before you, the frying pans soon become a mess with dough smeared all over. Though for dinner, groups are unable to make that kind of mess of your (nice) food, the noise they make almost oblige you to wear earplugs. However, this is not a shortcoming of the hotel but of its guests that cannot behave properly. The only thing we really didn't like here was the 7% extra charge when paying by credit card without being warned for this by the receptionist. Such a hefty fee should be advertised, both on the website and the reception desk.

Room Tip: The extra money for a loft room is well spent!

Dear Guest.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Hotel Hekla. We are delighted that you viewed your room being beautifully decorated and the dinner good.

Regarding the extra charge you mention regarding using credit card. This seems to be some misunderstanding as there is no extra charge for using any type of credit card at our hotel. We have looked into the matter and found your receipt. It has the total amount and then it has an item “vsk 7%”. This “vsk” is a government tax, value added tax of 7%. All our prices on internet and menus at the hotel already include this tax.

We had room 1 and first class it certainly was not!
It was small, at the bottom of the stairs directly underneath the bar, opposite what seemed to be the cleaners store room, a bit tired, had a view almost at ground level, there were only 4 hangers in the wardrobe between the 2 of us, the shower water flowed under the door to soak the whole bathroom and the route to the tea/coffee facilities involved either going outside or up the stairs . On the plus side the sound insulation must be pretty good as the noise wasn't too intrusive, the bed was very comfortable and the duvet soft and warm.

Out of our room the hotel improved dramatically. The bar is cosy with a lovely open fire, the restaurant is a bit "posh canteen" (as are most hotel restaurants) but the food is very good indeed, and all the staff we encountered throughout the hotel were most helpful.

We stayed 2 nights in early February specifically to see the Northern Lights and here again the staff excelled with one of them waking us any time the lights showed up until about 2am. But although we saw what to us was a magnificent display I'm sure it could been better if they had just turned off a number of what seemed to be unnecessary and quite powerful outside lights.

Room Tip: I suggest you avoid the low numbered rooms that are accessed down the staircase in reception as that...

Nice location and good facilities. Rooms are of a good quality but are 'lodge like' rather than top level hotel standard. Comfortable and reasonable sized with OK decor, only in room coffee making lacking. A reasonable venue for seeing the Northern Lights, although rather a lot of 'other light' from neighbouring buildings, including the distant greenhouses. Staff were helpful waking us to see the lights. Food was good at breakfast, although rather canteen style. The evening meals were very good in terms of quality and the service and staff standards were positive.

A good option for a lodge style rural couple of nights, accessible and pleasant.
