“we have six dogs and one veal who thinks he is a dog ;-)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2011

Arriving in very bad weather we originally planned to just check in and then head on for Reykjavik. However, after we (2 couples) had seen the rooms and the beautiful house, we changed our minds and decided to hang out and spend a lazy afternoon on the farm. We were lucky that all the other guests had left in the morning, so we had a whole house for us alone :-)
All the people on the farm are extremly nice and helpful, no matter what wishes you have. Dinner was great (trout from the lake close to the farm and a delicious porc dish), but breakfast in the morning was simply outstanding - far the best we had during our vacation: homemade whole-grain bread, jams, waffles - and even specialities like slátur, hángikjöt or síld.
And the veal really behaves like a dog :-)
Great, we will definitely return!

My new husband and I visited Iceland on our honeymoon, and our first night was at Vatnsholt! We drove direct there from the airport - this is perfectly possible within a few hours. It is in the middle of nowhere (make sure you know where you're going beforehand), like a lot of things in Iceland, but this only helps with the fantastic views. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and shown to our room. We were asked to take off our shoes when we got into the building. This is our only niggle, though a minor one - while it's an Icelandic tradition, and we didn't hesitate to do it, our shoes were very clean and we didn't like the hassle of putting them on and taking them off again when loading and unloading the car. However, while we booked a room with a shared bathroom (Iceland's very expensive!) we were pleasantly surprised to be given a lovely room with an en suite and a fantastic view. The bed was very comfortable and the shower nice and hot. When it came to breakfast, it was one of the best we had in Iceland.

All in all, Vatnsholt provided a lovely start to our honeymoon, and we very much recommend it!

Our family did a 10 day tour around Iceland and after doing the golden circle tour we stopped near Selfoss. Based on the great reviews we read, we booked the family room (travelling with 5) in Vatnsholt.

We absolutely loved it. Being in the middle of the countryside in Iceland and having a stayover is something you must experience and this place is perfect for that. The staff and owners are extremely friendly and are simply excellent hosts. After dinner, we asked them for tips for our drive the next day (to Hofn) and they gave us all the information we needed.

The rooms are basic but nice, comfortable and clean. As we were travelling with 5 adults, looking back at it we would probably have gone for the apartment rooms instead of the family room (which according to me is ideal for a family with kids) but this is only a minor detail. There is also a jaccuzi but that was broken during our stay.

Location wise it is only a 10 min drive to Selfoss, which was a very dull place anyway.

The 3-course dinner was also reasonably priced and very good (the lamb is probably the best we had in our whole trip).

We loved this place and wish the owners all the best as this gem is absoluty worth staying at.

Just got back a couple of days ago from our honeymoon in Iceland and Vatnsholt was by far the best place we stayed. Johaan and Margaret plus animals were so helpful, kind and inspiring. The meals were excellent, especially the trout from their lake. We had only booked one night here and ended up staying for three and made some friends for life.
We will definitely return to Iceland and this is where we will stay!

This was my fifth trip to Iceland and, having never stayed in the Selfoss area, I did a bit of research and found Vatnsholt. I had read others' reviews on Tripadvisor but nothing rightfully can describe a stay here.

My mother and I pulled up after a more-than-full day, exhausted and hungry. After a warm greeting by some of the farm's animals, we were led into a dining room for an exceptional meal, wine, and conversation with Johann Helgi and Margret. We then were given our choice of rooms, all of which were lovely, clean, and well-suited to our needs. The next two days were filled with gorgeous scenery, an eclectic mix of friendly animals to marvel at, and the most pleasant and attentive proprietors I can recall. Never interruptive, yet they seem to have an uncanny ability to know what you need just before or as you need it.

The location itself is perfectly suited for anyone wishing to do the better part of the "golden circle" tour without the dreaded tour bus. 45 mins or so in a main road drive from Reykjavik. You're in full view of the volcanoes, but with a gorgeous landscape of a lake and farmland between you. The sunsets are extraordinary, even when it never fully sets. Judging from Johann Helgi's photos, it's an equally ideal location to view an aurora borealis once the darkness returns.

Speaking of returns, I plan to do so once the fall season hits to catch an aurora. This will be my new "home base" in Iceland, hopefully for years to come.

Room Tip: Let them know of your needs, there are plenty of options - all very reasonably priced.

Great spot to relax after a day of sightseeing or hiking. Staff do everything possible to make you feel comfortable. Owners offer great travel tips. Food is wonderful. The farm animals add to the tranquil setting - especially the friendly farm dogs and calf. Immaculate and comfortable rooms. It was the best place that we stayed on our trip to Iceland.

Clean and comfortable accommodations, wonderful food, and so welcoming. Margrét and Jóhann are great hosts and make you feel right at home. The farm animals are all sweet and friendly, and the trout from the pond are especially delicious!
