Owner description: Laugarvatn Fontana is composed of a series of interconnected baths and steam rooms that complement each other to create a healthy, natural and unique spa experience.Three steam rooms, collectively called GUFAN, have been built over a natural hot spring that has been used since 1929. The temperature of the steam varies depending on the temperature of the hot spring and weather, usually between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). Humidity is very high in the steam room cabins. Grids in the floor of the steam rooms allow guests to hear and smell the boiling natural hot spring underneath, creating a natural and totally unique experience.Next to the steam room is YLUR, a Finnish-style sauna. The temperature is between 80°C (176°F) and 90°C (194°F), with a lower humidity than the steam room having a big window facing the lake of Laugarvatn. LAUGA, SÆLA, and VISKA are interconnected outdoor mineral baths that vary in depth, size and temperature. Some areas are suitable for relaxation and others offer space for movement and playfull moments. Stone artwork made by Icelandic artist, Erla Thórarinsdóttir, enhance each visitor’s experience. VISKA, the hot tub, is built at a slightly higher level than the other baths, providing a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings while the healthy water nourishes both body and soul.Completing the ensemble are VATNIÐ and STRÖNDIN — the lake and the beach. Visitors will reach VATNIÐ through a gate. STRÖNDIN has warm black sand, which has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and other joint illnesses. VATNIÐ provides an opportunity to cool down between visits to GUFAN and YLUR, a temperature shift that is both healthy and strengthening

“Relaxing and rejuvenating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

On your way to/from Gullfoss or to/from the Geysir stop here and relax....just relax...and enjoy! A little oasis next to a lake with great facilities and lovely food.

“Lakeside lounging”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Great place for steam, springs and rye bread. Had a quick tour of the facility by the owner and then took us out to the lake and dug up a pot burried in the sand. After taking out the pot the water just rose up in the hole and started to bubble. Inside he unwrapped the container and this wonderful loaf of rye bread was unmasked. Smelled delicious and tasted even better. This is a speciality of Icelandic families. Each having their own recipe handed down. Afterwards to the pools and steam rooms. The steam rooms are built right over the steam vents from the lake, nothing artificial. Three pools and a new one on the way. Cool, warm and warmest. Great way to end the Golden Circle tour!

“A nice warm experience near the end of winter”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

I liked this facility for it's easy access from the lobby to the change/shower rooms and then on to the steam rooms and the floating pools. It was very clean although the steam rooms are a bit rugged due to the intense steam and sulphuric air. A very nice way to spend a few hours. The snack foods (sandwiches, cakes etc) were very good.

“Fantastic pool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013 via mobile

I enjoyed this more than the blue lagoon. It felt a little more authentic and the view was beautiful. The hot tub was definitely warmer than the blue lagoon (where we spent most of our time trying to find warm spots near the vents). Overall, well worth a visit.

“Could be much better. . .”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

. . . and was not quite what we were expecting. I'd seen a review on TA that Laugarvatn Fontana was better than the Blue Lagoon which having visited both I whole heartedly disagree with!! Fontana is like a small public swimming pool but made to look like a spa. There are three pools, one of which is very shallow so when you are sitting on the bottom the water only just covers your thighs. I was expecting the water to be hotter and more 'therapeutic' - you could smell chlorine in the water which I wasn't expecting. There are three saunas at various temperatures, the middle one which is great (the first one is far too cold for a sauna, and the third one is far too hot and people had to prop open the door to sit in it!). The changing rooms were not particularly clean and the showers are communal with no private cubicles for bathing or changing.

We visited on a quiet day thankfully as if there were more than say 50 people it would be packed with no room to move. There were signs not to go in the lake so we didn't. It looks like they are building another pool so the view of the lake was ruined slightly by this.
