“Very pleasant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

We spent a night here on our driving tour and really enjoyed our short stay. The staff were friendly, the meal in the restaurant was lovely (the waitress was very pleasant) and our rooms were clean, warm, well-equipped and quiet. The free internet access was much appreciated. No real negatives at all. A good choice.

We really enjoyed our week based at the Hotel Ork in Hveragerdi. The building is attractive and set in a pleasant town in a fascinating goethermal area. It is also very well placed for the major tourist attractions of the southeast. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the rooms comfortable and pleasant with good bathrooms. The only thing we missed were tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms despite having a large fridge. Although the waterslide wasn't working the swimming pool was huge enough to do a few lengths in before lounging in the two hot pools (38-40 degrees and 40-42 degrees) or the natural steam room. People came and went but generally we had the pool to ourselves in the early evening at the end of August. Breakfast was good with a wide choice of goodies on the continental style buffet. Lovely bread! We used the restuarant once for a special meal and staff were very friendly and accomodating. It was an excellent meal but the menu is quite small and there wasn't so much for younger people. There are however three good restaurants nearby as well as some really great bakeries and take-aways. We would love to visit Hotel Ork again - I'm already missing the calm and relaxed atmosphere of the hotel and the area in general. My daughter has put in a request already to return next year.

We got 'bumped' by the Frost and Fire Hotel into the Hotel Ork, and having not chosen this hotel the first time round our expectations weren't high. The negatives are there to see: it doesn't have much character, it's getting a little frayed at the edges (the pool slide wasn't operational when we were there, the tablecloths are frayed, etc.) and it is the sort of place that will attract large groups (which can be annoying as independent travelers). But we had a most enjoyable stay there. It seems to do most of the important things right: generally very helpful service, large rooms (we had two interconnecting rooms and were able to put our four small children in one with us in the other, which worked well); free wi-fi; good breakfasts; a fridge in the room (especially useful if you have just come from an apartment and still have food); nice bathrooms with decent showers; and the food in the restaurant was very good (and, for Iceland, reasonably priced). Overall it's comfortable, convenient and a good base for exploring the surrounding area.

This hotel is more impressive from outside and around the lobby area and restauarant than in the room, which was basic but clean and comfortable. The one unusual feature was a bath - the other hotels we stayed in just had showers. I was surprised that there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The restaurant has a lovely outlook - on the day I was there we had a gorgeous view of the sunset and moonrise to accompany our nicely prepared and presented smoked lamb and pan-fried cod. Breakfast was fairly standard: cold meats, bread, cheese, fruit, with less variety than in some of the more 'basic' hotels we stayed in during the tour.

Our first stay heading east was not a good experience - room without a view, without a fridge, and both had upset stomachs soon after breakfast - less than fresh herring, we guess... Second experience returning west could not have been more different. Asked for a room with a view, and got a fridge as bonus! On a rainy day discovered that the huge and almost unused pool is 29 degrees celsius, has two hot pools and a natural steam room (scored as a spa). Ample car parking and good location for side trips to Geyser, Gulfoss or the east. Things that could be better: breakfast is really boring - ham, cheese and ryvita, and not much else - no waffles, porridge or anything warm other than toast; the pool table is a viking relic and the table-tennis table a saga relic (scored as fitness centre, as there isn't one of those either in spite of the space). Overall, a good place to stay... and remember to use the pool even if it is cold and rainy outside!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and insist on a fridge if you want one.

Spent two nights here. Room was a good size and had a modern feel to it. Bathroom was very nice. Beds comfy. Staff friendly and helpful.

Free wifi - which is always good to see

Hot tubs and pool were very good - changing rooms were small, but clean.

We ate one night in the restaurant which was excellent - food was really good. Breakfast was fine - standard selection of bread/meat etc.

I am a hotel snob, I admit it. I don't want to stay someplace less nice than where I live. But we did not come to Iceland for the hotel rooms. I would never in a million years chosen Hotel Ork- it was chosen by a travel agency for us as we couldn't find a room to save our lives. That being said, this is a boring big block hotel. Very dated decoration. Our room faced the sun and it was stiflingly hot and the windows didn't open enough to get cool air in.

When we checked in, my son was super excited to try the water slide and pool. The water slide is huge but it was a big disappointment as it simply didn't slide enough to actually get down it at all. Not cool.

Breakfast was also a disappointment. The food wasn't fantastic and the service poor. It is always a pain when there aren't enough glasses and silverware and things and you have to ask. Especially when the attitiude is flippant.
