We stayed here for two nights on our recent 2 week Iceland tour. Being a family of 4 with teenagers we found that this Edda Summer Hotel was unusual in that it has some 2 level 4 bed rooms for families, (but they are only bookable through the hotel's call cenmtre or Email, not via the Web site). Like many other Edda Hotels this is a High School for the area, so you are in Student accomodation, this time with shared facilities. These rooms were HUGE, with a circular stage case between floor 1 & 2. The views accross the mountains and lake were also fantastic! Bathroom thouigh was very small, with usual Wet room arrangements.
The Hotel when we visited was about half full, with just a few coach trips using it. LIke all these High School accommodations the rooms are off echoy corridors, and have no TVs in rooms, only in communial areas. Usual Icelantic Buffet breakfast at extra cost, and a good restaurant choice for the evening meal, but no choices that our teenagers would touch...so we were down at the excellent Shell or N1 Petrol station Grills in the town.
This is a fairly recent built town, so the facilities are modern and laid out on the US Grid system. Basically the town exists because it is the road junction for many roads leading to the many Esat Fjords, so is a main hub also with good shopping (three supermarkets, and a mini shopping centre!). Driving around the lake, visiting Henifoss is recommended (you can walk 30 minutes up the mountian to view it). Also getting to some of the pretty Fjord twons is an adventure on windy gravel roads over mountain passes. Hint: there's a free car wash available at the N1 Garage afterwards!
