“Beautiful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Hotel Reykjalid is beautifully situated directly on the shore of Lake Myvatn. This is one of the best birding locations in all of Europe, even in the off season. Waterfowl are unique, sheep are grazing in nearby pastures, and the hotel is just a few kilometers from a fun hike through the boiling mud pits, lava fields, or giant pseudocraters. The nearby nature baths are a big draw, and provide a unique experience, especially at night. Our stay was smooth and quiet, and handled by very professional and friendly young hotel staff. Get downstairs early for breakfast before the fruit tray gets too stale, and if you need laundry service, pay less and go down the road a couple of miles to Daddi's Pizza, where laundry service is also offered. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, the 3rd level room 11 is the best of them all, with panoramic views of the lake from two sides. The rooms are well-lit and large by European standards. Bed was fantastic - very comfortable! We stayed two nights and loved this little hotel. If we return we will stay again.

Room Tip: Reserve room 11 for the best views of the lake any time of the year. No elevator - two flights of s...

Myvatn was furthest North, clearest skies, and most best possibility for Aurora on our trip, so I opted for the top floor double superior with great view over the lake. They did not disappoint. NLights were stretched out over the lake 2of the 3 nights in September 2013. Maybe I'm biased because that is not really a reflection on the hotel, except that top deck room was an assist.
Reykjahlid is a tiny village on lake Myvatn. Hotel has excellent scenic location. BF was superb including bacon and eggs. Evenings they put out snacks and coffee/tea which is welcome after a day of hiking and birding.
Only problem is no hotpot.

Who needs TV in a room when you get views like this! Really laid back friendly hotel in great lakeside setting. Good breakfast and although doesn't have own restaurant for evening meals there are two great alternative places to eat 5 minute walk down the raod. Would definatley recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Almost goes without saying - Try to get a room with lakeside view!

This is well sited hotel, overlooking the lake, just back from the main road.
We had a fantastic check in, offered a map of the area, advice on things to do and places to eat. Best staff of anywhere in our whole trip.
Our room was on the second floor at the back, so warm from the afternoon sun, and great views of sunset. The first place in our stay to finally offer 4 foam pillows! Everything clean. Small table and two chairs to enjoy the view by the window. We were there in September, but I'm guessing earlier in the summer you would want thicker curtains for the day long sunshine. We found the bathroom with no curtain just an obscured lower half a bit off putting, but in the end it did not seem to be a problem as no-one behind us to see. Would have liked a mirror in the bedroom though.
No TV in room, but there is a resident TV lounge area. No tea tray - but turned out that there is complimentary hot drinks and biscuits available 24/7 in the dining room, and we loved going back at the end of the afternoon and sitting in the back with a drink and reading or playing board games. This is a place that is so relaxing it is like being at home.
The staff offer a selection of drinks at the bar and we loved that they were always cleaning, never standing around chatting.
Around 9pm first night, we saw Northern Lights - sat in our room and watched them light up the whole sky in front of us for around two hours.
Breakfast was great - continental selection, but offered fresh cooked bacon and scrambled eggs. Again, such friendly staff.
Apparently, Myvatn meands midges - and they were out in force! Lots of mosquitoes too.
We ate at the Giml Bistro - see sep review.

Room Tip: ask for room at the back overlooking Lake Myvatn

Fantastic location on the shores of Lake Myvatn. Easy to find. Our triple room was charming, spacious and clean with unforgettable views to the lake. Comfortable beds.
Cosy breakfast and sitting room with tea and coffe available all day. Free Wi-fi. No restaurant on site but a couple of them in the town and at their sister hotel.
We tried Daddi `pizza, that is actually ranked on 1st here on tripadvisor ( I don `t know why...), but I think there are better choices around...
Kind staff. Great breakfast served in a lovely breakfast room with lake views. A little on the expensive side, as everything in Iceland, but seems that this is the best option to stay in Myvatn area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with lake views.

We stayed for two nights and had a room with an amazing view over the water. The staff are friendly and breakfast was very nice. The room is quite large and very clean. The only negative is that the walls are thin and we could her the people in the next room talking, opening and shutting their door continuously which got to be annoying.

If you are visiting Iceland, Lake Myvatn is a must visit place and you dont need to look beyond this Hotel. Its simply outstanding. The views from our room was quite stunning and the rooms per se were spacious. The caretakers were very friendly. We went there a day before our reservation and since it was winter, the hotel was locked with no guests. We had to call the owner who ensured people drove all the way to open the Hotel and accomodate us within a couple of hours. Further since we are vegetarians, they specifically called their cook (who was on vacation) and got a few recipes and cooked for us. Truly a great experience. The staff were helpful with just abt everything - be it regarding suggestion of places to see, tour companies, road conditions etc.

Lake Myvatn is a stunningly beautiful place. Further the aurora sightings here were the best in our entire trip. The tour packages are a lot more expensive than the ones in Reykjavik.Sunrise / Sunset points are definitely a highlight and is quite near Hotel Reykjahlid - abt 10 mins drive.
