“Fantastic place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

This was by far our favourite place to stay of our trip to the Peloponnese. It is a 3 star hotel and we could not see how it wasn’t a 4 or 5 star.

The room was a loft room, so we had a double bed and there was then a stairs to an open loft area where the child bed was. You could have slept 2 kids in the loft area, or 1 adult. The hotel is really stylish and the room was very classy. All very simple colours with plenty of stone. Pure class. Towels and linens were changed daily and beach towels every second day.

The hotel has a lovely pool, an excellent restaurant and is located on Mavrouni beach so you can either go to the pool or to the beach where the hotel provides umbrellas and sun loungers. Staff extremely helpful. The price (EUR120 per night) included breakfast for the 3 of us and represented great value for what we got. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. The only issue is location – it is not in the town so you need a car, or you need to be happy to eat at the hotel. We did one night and were really taken aback at how good the food was.

We had a few other good meals in Gythio. We liked Nissus restaurant and ate there twice (the first restaurant as you go out along the pier towards the little island with the lighthouse). The wine we really liked both here and in the hotel restaurant was called Biblia Chora, both the red and the white were excellent.

Probably the culinary highlight of our whole trip was in Gythio – not a fancy meal at all but a little souvlaki place that served only one dish – fried pitta bread with a pork skewer and a slice of cheese. Salty, sinful, and just delicious. Never had anything like it before. The place was full of Greeks drinking beer, shouting and generally having a good time. The food was heaven. The souvlaki place was just beside a cafe called the “corner cafe” and it is on a road running perpendicular to Ermou (if you go along by the playground on Ermou and keep going you will find it on your left).

What a wonderful discovery at Mavrovounie Beach. I have been coming to this beach for over 35 years and was quite surprised by this beautiful castle by the sea.
The rooms are very spacious and super clean. The hotel offers Coco-Mat mattress which is the best in the world. I'm in the process of purchasing a king size for my residence.
The Hotel offers a first class restaurant which is open until midnight. The pool is clean and refreshing and the beach is always clean and offers beverage and food service.
A perfect stay and one of the best vacations I've had in a very long time. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the hotel allowed the general public the opportunity to use the pool. When you pay top dollar to relax by the pool, you don't want a bunch of screaming and rowdy local kids making lots of noise. After all it's a hotel, not a beachside pool bar like you find throughout Greece.
Nevertheless, we will be back again--we love this place too much!

Had the pleasure of spending five days at Castello Antico in early August. My family and I were very impressed with the room, restaurant, facilities but most importantly with the staff.
The breakfasts were excellent with lots of local products, no need to visit the local tavernas the hotel restaurant offered delicious meals at competitive prices. The room was absolutely beautiful and the full porch offered a stunning view of the ocean. The A/C in the room was essentially silent and ice cold, which came in handy In the middle of a heat wave...
The beach cabanas and chairs were always kept neat and tidy, just remember to reserve them early because they fill up quickly.
Our fondest memories were of the great people working at the hotel, like Pavlo, Panagioti and Pagona who were always helpful and cheerful. Can't wait for the next chance to stay there again.

Castello Antico is a newly built hotel very charming; A lot of vegetation has been planted and it will be a perfect garden in few years.
The beach is nevertheless crowded in August by people that are not from the hotel, parking their cars between the hotel and the sea (whereas resident have a parking correctly situated at the entry of the hotel).
There were also many familys and babys.
Rooms are very celan and staff is efficient and nice.

Dear Mr. FrenchfromParis,

We would like to thank you for choosing Castello Antico Hotel to spend your holidays in Gythio area. We feel grateful about your comments. We are planning to make a bigger parking area in the entrance of the hotel and provide guests with a "club car" service, by transfer them from the parking area to the rooms and the beach. This is an eco-thinking solution because there will be no cars close to the sandy beach, while the car operates with batteries and not with fuel, which is better for our enviroment.

We will be happy to host you again in the future.

Best regards,

Castello Antico Team.

We stayed there in July 2012 and had a great time. The hotel is carefully designed, with friendly and effective service and a wonderful beach right in front of the property. Breakfast comprised of excellent quality local products, rooms were very clean and beautiful, all staff polite and helpful and responded immediately to any request. As I have visited the surrounding area many times, I would say it is by far one of the best hotels I've stayed.

Castello Antico is located a few kilometers outside Gytheio on a quiet location at the nice Mavrovouni beach. The hotel is built in traditional stone and has very nice rooms. The food is excellent and the staff is very very friendly and helpful. It is just a few meters walk from the hotel room to the quiet beach, where parasols and beachbeds are waiting.
The hotel is a 5 minutes drive from Gytheio. In about half an hours drive westwards are the Diros caves and the ancient city of Mystras (near Sparta) is about 40 minutes northwards.

we stayed one (far too short) week end July 2012 (2 adults +2 teenager sons).
The settingby the sea with a private beach, the friendly service from every one (even the cleaning staff were very efficient and polite!). Nice food, served all day long, even at the beach, under a parasol. Mostly Greek guests, with children. But never stressy. Gazing at the stars on the lawn, by candle light with soft lounge music...This address is almost too good to share with others....(August seems to be a more busy month, with live music and DJ sessions: more for the incrowd, I guess?)
