My husband and I visited Dachau in early March 2006. We didn't do a tour as we wanted to take our time and experience the place at our own pace. We are extremely glad that we chose to do it this way after suffering thorough a terribly inadequate tour of Auschwitz a few weeks later.
Dachau is easy to reach via train and then a short bus trip from Munich (the information centre next to Munich Station gives out detailed instructions of which train/bus to take).
At the camp we did not hire an audio piece. They simply go through what is written on the information boards so we decided to just read them ourselves.
I would recommend viewing the very moving documentary (which is shown in a few different languages) to begin your visit. From there you can take your time to visit the camp area and then spend hours in the brilliant museum.
The camp area was blanketed with snow for our visit and our day at Dachau was one of the most moving experiences of our 3 month trip around Europe.
