“Lest we Forget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

An eerie place to visit, but also a very important piece of Germany's history. To visit it at this time with the snow you could only imagine the conditions these prisoners had to endure on top of the SS guards. I was truly touched as we were walking that the memorial bell rang, as it does everyday at 3pm.

“Let us Never Forget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Was amazed to find this camp was open and in use many years before WW2 started. Very interesting part of history and the story of the camp is so well presented. Was good to see so many school and college groups while we visited

“Sobering experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

From the second we stepped off the bus and onto the grounds of Dachau, like many others have said it is silent. We were there a few weeks ago in February and it was a very cold day. You can't prepare yourself for the experience you will have. You can really feel what happened here and seeing the grounds and the photos of the people who had to stand outside in the gravel for hours in hot and freezing cold temperatures makes you realize their suffering and pain. The museum they have put together is very informative and takes you back to the beginning of the camp up until liberation. Some of the material is hard to read, just because it makes you sick to see what happened to these people and how they were treated. They did a good job with the memorial and I think it's important to remember those that had died there. It's definitely an experience I will never forget. You will learn a lot and have more compassion for what happened and leave in hopes that people never have to suffer like that again.

“Cold and snowing - what an eery feeling!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

I was a cloudy, snowy day and you could just feel what the prisoners must have felt like - but we had our jackets on!! We went on the 2.5 hr tour with an English speaking guide - it was very good!!

“Still good, but watered down”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

We first visited Dachau as college students in the 80s. We went back last summer with our three teens. Unfortunately the experience has been "watered down" to the point that we did not find it as compelling as our first visit. The first time we went, we were dropped off in what felt like the middle of nowhere, and then we had to walk up to the gate. It was very haunting in that there were no comforts to be found. Now they have built a lovely Visitor's Center like you would find at any historical spot. While the cafeteria is delicious, and the bathrooms and gift shop are very nice, it was a distraction for us. I understand the need for proper facilities, but it was unfortunate in my eyes. The museum movie was excellent and new. We used the audio tour but I wish we had taken a guided tour because there is so much information, it was hard for our teens to take it all in. The prison cells near the museum were not opened when were first there so that was fascinating to see. The barracks and Crematorium were the same, but they had removed a number of large photos of prisoners taken in the same locations. While the photos has been sickening to view, they really gave you a more intense feeling of how the prisoners were persecuted . Additionally, signs behind the Crematorium which identified the blood troughs where the firing squads shot prisoners were removed. I don't know why they were removed, but I remember that being one of the most sobering things I saw at Dachau the first time. Of course I DO recommend that others go to Dachau. As we know, those who forget the past are destined to repeat it. I just hope those in charge rethink the watered down version of they story they are telling.
