I have stayed at the Basin Park 4 or 5 times in the past 20 or 25 years. Always loved it. It's an old historic hotel with a lot of charm as far as I am concerned. I love the location, right in the middle of all the historic area of Euerka Springs. Each time I have stayed the room was built or shaped differently. My favorite activity? Sitting on the restaurant balcony and watching all the people walk by on the street below. Lack of a continental breakfast didn't bother me at all because I prefer a full service, full breakfast eggs and bacon kind of breakfast anyway and there is a good place about a block away called Mud Street Cafe. Were the floors a little uneven in places? Yeah but so what? What I mean by uneven is not the tripping kind of uneven but it felt like it was a little higher at one side of the room than the other. It added to the charm of the place. It was built before WW1 after all. As far as noise is concerned: There were a LOT of motorcycles in Euerka Springs this weekend (Memorial Day). But our room was on the backside (up against the hill) of the hotel and very quiet. So if that is a concern of your's, request a hillside room not a streetside room. Some have complained about cleanliness. I didn't notice any lack of cleanliness. Seemed plenty clean to me. Not Updated? I'm not sure what that means. Everything worked, water, shower, lights, air conditioner, etc. I was very comfortable except for ONE thing. The bed was a little to soft. I don't remember having that on any of my previous stays so I don't know if that is just our one room or if all the mattresses need to be replaced. I nevertheless slept fine. The elevator was a little slow but not to the point where it caused any problems at all. EXCEPT one time: As we got on to go up to our room, 4 giggling teenage brats got off. After we got on we saw why they were giggling. They had pressed all the buttons for every floor right before they got off. Took awhile to get to our floor.
Also it took awhile to get used to that room key. It was metal instead of the usual plastic. Pushed it in the slot and pulled it out and waited for the little green light before trying the door handle. No green light ever appeared. Turns out you have to push it in the slot and then TURN IT for the door to open. VERY COOL!!
So if you are looking for a cookie cutter room where everything looks brand new and a large screen TV, book at Holliday Inn and leave a room at the Basin Park available to people who appreciate a historic old hotel.
