The website for this motel is a fib. Sure, there are two person jacuzzi's in select rooms, which is what I stayed in, but the place was absolutely uninhabitable.
After checking into the full-sized suite, my travel companion and I were taken aback by the lack of maintenance to the outside of the building. The door lock did not work well, and upon going inside the suite we found that the sliding glass door did not lock.
Figuring that there must not be a great need for security in a small town, we checked out the large bedroom and lay down on the bed to give it a feel. Not two seconds after lying down, a huge SPIDER crawled out from the pillowcase. I killed it...hoping it was a fluke...but was too nervous to lay back down without giving all of the pillows a good shake. Another spider fell out of the pillowcase...which again was quickly killed. My partner started an impromptu inspection to see where else the little buggers might be hiding, and immediately found them in the couch, the closets, and anywhere else dark and dank.
After calling the owner and showing him the spiders, he basically blew me off and told me to just "smack 'em" if I see them. He assured me that they were harmless, but they were too large to be ignored. Being from the midwest, I also know that spiders that lurk in dark places and don't weave webs are likely brown recluse spiders, which ARE poisonous.
After thinking long and hard about it, I decided there was no way to stay there comfortably. I spoke to the owner again, and he was entirely unsympathetic, and only refunded the 2nd night of my two night reservation. Because the reservation was made over labor day, we had to turn around and leave the town (there were NO vacancies) which completely ruined our weekend getaway.

Regarding ''Avoid At All Costs.''
There were three small spiders found. The exterminators come each quarter and actually had been here just a few days before the couple's visit. The gentleman was terribly arachnophobic according to the young lady. While he was not looking she mouthed the words, ''he is really afraid of spiders.''
The spiders in question are very common to the area and are quite benign. This is what the ''bug busters'' said just a few days before and this info. was passed on the the young lady and her friend. It is actually very rare to see any insects at The Alpen Dorf as the exterminators come on a regular basis but one must remember we are in the Ozark Mountains and there is a great deal of wonderful forest still here. A close watch has been kept and nothing has been seen since.
Regarding the charges, policy was pre-explained at time of reservation in this case and was followed. In many cases The Alpen Dorf will offer a discount for next stay if someone is displeased for a valid reason.
We hope all will not form an opinion from something clearly written in anger. The Alpen Dorf is a lovely place, clean and comfortable and we do all we can to please our guests.
Kindest regards,
Mgmt. The Alpen Dorf.
