We arrived about 8 PM, only to learn that the 1st floor Lully room we had reserved literally 6 months in advance had been given to someone else (keep in mind we chose the 1st floor room since I have mobility issues). Given that the chateau has only 4 or 5 rooms total, and one of them was still available, we found this very difficult to understand. The problem was that the one room that was still available was up three flights of stairs total and there was no way that I could climb that far. My husband was then told about lovely accommodations in the attic of the adjacent manoir house (instead of the chateau) which we agreed to because we had no choice.
After climbing the stairs and trying to drive my wheelchair through the long pea gravel drive, I arrived to find a not so lovely offering. The manoir house attic was quite large with a separate living room and bedroom, as well as a common toilet in the hall and shower / sink off the bedroom. The bedroom had a low sloping ceiling and an unpleasant smell. Furniture was old (not antique, but tattered and rundown) and the bedroom smelled of must which was probably from leaky windows based on the huge water stains on the walls and ceiling. We had no phone so my husband had to walk to the main chateau (probably a quarter mile) any time we needed anything and I’m really not sure what one would do if there was a problem in the middle of the night. At any rate, given that it was 8 PM, we had no choice but to stay the night and check out in the morning. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights and had been looking forward to our chateau stay for months.
The main chateau is locked up at night, but they gave us the security code so we could get in. My husband went over early in the morning to use the Internet and check in on his business (it was down the night before in the chateau, and the signal does not reach the manoir house), only to find that he couldn’t get in. The security code only opens the first door, but the second one is bolted from the inside. The innkeepers finally opened the doors around 7:45 AM to let their dogs out. Needless to say, he was pissed.
Breakfast was standard French continental (Croissants, baguettes, jam, yogurt, fruit, juice). For what it’s worth, the other guests we met at breakfast seemed to be enjoying themselves. We resisted the urge to interrogate them to find out who got our room.
We did notice with some irony they had their 2005 and 2006 Trip Advisor “Traveler’s Choice” awards displayed near the desk where we checked out after our one forgettable night. So beware of the bait and switch when considering booking at this property!
