Loved the Mirador suite at Aaculaax. The room, a short trek up some relatively steep steps from (almost all of) the remainder of the hotel, was awesome. The room shares a kitchen and patio with one of the other suites. Up a couple more steps and you enter a living/lounge room with a couple wicker chairs and setee with many windows paned with beautiful glass. Up the spiral staircase crafted from wood and you finally reach the real reason for reserving the Mirador: wraparound floor to ceiling sliding glass windows that look over the lake and the volcanoes. Truly breathtaking. Also upstairs is the outdoor bathroom (with hot water and a flushing toilet). Have to point out here that we spent nearly no time at all in the living/lounge room...spent all our time either on the patio watching and listening to birds or on the bed reading and feeling the calm breezes through the open windows. Also have to point out here that, although the neighbors' roosters woke us early in the morning, they wake us to some of the most memorable sunrises we've ever shared. (This from somebody who grew up in Colorado seeing some terrific sunrises.)
The on-site restaurant, where we ate breakfast a couple mornings, offered delicious, simple meals served by friendly staff. The restaurant down the way, right above the "beach" a 2 minute walk away, was also pretty nice (simple but very pleasant with great bird watching).
The grounds/gardens were beautiful. Not much more can be said.
The staff behind the desk were very friendly. That said, though we got by well enough, it might be helpful to have a Spanish phrase book if you don't speak the language.
Long story short: The hotel was as memorable as the people and landscapes (we recommend a hiking tour by Luis, set up by the folks at the front desk) of Lake Atitlan.
