“Terrific Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

I don't recall the name of the lady that was running the hotel at the time I stayed there for 2 nights, but her hospitality really was outstanding. The place itself is beautiful, with a minimum staff but keeping everything where it's supposed to be to make out of your stay a very good gettaway from the regular routine. The only reason as of why I didn't give a 5-star rating to the hotel was the dock where you can take breakfast, with little to no shade to cover from the sun.

The view from our hotel was spectacular, with the sound of the lake in the night acting as a lullaby.

I stayed in Room #8, and it was clean, despite there were some gaps in the corner of the windows, the rustic style of the room made me feel in a very cozy environment, no bed bugs and the staff cleaned our room while we were out, respecting our belongings, and even we had left some cash out forgotten in the bed, we came back to find it in our table. Really recommended for romantic gettaways.

Room Tip: Pick Room 8. The view is amazing. The safe box is behind the mirror in the bathroom.

I really enjoyed staying here. I was in San Marcos for 5 days and would book there again. I thought it was very clean, well put together, great porch to look over the lake, and was private.
The cons are there is no internet or free breakfast, depending on the room you are in.
The pluses are, they are the only ones that take credit cards, clean, nice staff, great views, warm water, there is a sauna, and has a hammock.

Room Tip: Number 10 was a great room, its private and the bathroom is super nice!!!

Posada Schumann is just to your right as you leave the dock. It has been built in a charming way, has a restaurant and takes credit cards.

The room we stayed in was a bit tight with two single beds in it but had a nice table, chairs. Obviously someone had given thought to guest comfort. The beds were great, the place was clean. There is also a sauna but no one offered it to us. Same with the restaurant. It had a dead feeling about it. I think the people running the place really prefer not to be bothered.

The woman who originally welcomed us seemed personable. I wish I could say the same for the women who were there the next day, they were too busy sitting around with their coffee to even get up. Sorry, I didn't get the names of everyone but at least two of the women have no hospitality skills and do not appreciate guests. We were going to stay two or three more nights but decided to move because of the lack of interest on the part of the staff.

It is a fabulous location. I think the best rooms would be upstairs on the front. The property runs to both sides of the lane.

Room Tip: Upstairs, to front of property seems best.

My average rating refers only to the service and people skills of the staff at the time we were there. They were the least friendly, helpful and hospitable of all the hotel staff we came across in Guatemala. When you're booking, don't ask for breakfast as it's overpriced and takes ages to arrive. Take the first left and stroll down to the lovely French hotel about a hundred yards away as it is open much earlier. In all other respects, Schumann is a lovely place to stay as it's right by the lake and has the most spectacular views of Atilan imaginable. The room we stayed in was delightful: large, full of light and elegantly furnished with a small garden by the lake. Don't come to San Marcos if you have any kind of aversion to New Age Hokey Pokey because it's crawling with Hippies seeking Lunar Healing, Bowel/Consciousness integration, Didgery Doo meditation etc. On the other hand, the real world is represented by a pleasant local shopping centre where you can meet the saner locals. Whatever you do, don't go swimming near this hotel as you will be decapitated by one of the many speedboats. The hotel should have a sign to this effect. fabulous walks and swimming opportunities nearby though.

San Marcos is probably the quietest of the Lake Atitlan villages, being virtually car free. Posada Schumann is situated right on the lakefront by the boat jetty. It had a small restaurant in a pretty garden. Nice for breakfast. The building in which I stayed had two stories, was made of wood, and had a small balcony. It was functional, with a very small bathroom, and rather low water pressure. However, although the room was a little ordinary, the view of the lake and volcanoes was absolutely extraordinary; and would have been worth twice the price. I took so many photographs from the balcony in the beautiful rearly morning light that it was almost impossible to edit them! All in all, a lovely, quiet and atmospheric little place.

Room Tip: I stayed in the upstairs room of the building on the far side of the lane, overlooking the lake, wit...

It was the only hotel that accepted credit card. Overall, it was a nice experience, except for the fact that some rooms shared bathroom. I do recomend this hotel.
