“Cheap but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

We were disappointed by this place after we had heard some great things. The rooms are ok but far from great. However, the price is quite low so you can accept that. Problem is the staff are quite moody and in general it seems to be a little stale. The English owner is nice enough and the pizzas are quite good for central america. I suppose I would not recommend San Marcos la Laguna as a whole really as it was a little run down.

I discovered this hotel through a great couple of American people who stayed there and got really charmed by the place : it feels as if you were in the jungle....The room was quite nice and clean and in low season the price was very good for such place...with a (small) breakfast included.
Disadvantages are the food is quite expensive for Guatemala and for that area, wi-fi was not very stable, and we did not have water at all for more that a day, they say it often happens in the villages around the lake...

Stayed in Room 1 at Paco Real for just under a week .Room was functional and slept three although we only used it for two - private hot shower and toilet a bonus .
FREE and FUNCTIONING Wi-Fi and the BEST PIZZA ive had anywhere
in the world - they should be franchising the menu !
Friendly and informative staff and a great stay .

I was in San Marcos in February while in Anitgua for a bit. my friend and I went for the weekend from Anitgua and were both astounded by the vibe abound in Paco Real. the endearingly charismatic owner Paul and his local staff facilitate a relaxed existence where you can learn spanish, be in the intimate & sprawling garden and move in and out at your leisure. The cabins are amplious, the balcony meant for beers and abundant thought, and overall the most "real" place in a beautiful town that is at times tainted with rigid forms of spirituality. Highly recommended for travellers of any sort. Epic pizza's too, and Paul can seriously cook a feed!

I stayed at Paco Real some months ago and am just putting up my review now. This hotel is a very good option in this small town, with both hostel rooms, private rooms without bathroom (shared) and with a private bath.

Anyone travelling in Guatemala will know service standards are simply not the same as they are in North America, so I am not basing this review on those standards, but rather my experiences in Central America. I dont review every place I stay at, but I think this one deserves it.

San Marcos is a very small town on a big lake, and there are few places there to stay. Many are booked up and I have seen people wandering around trying to find a room and being forced to go to the large party town of San Pedro instead. It can help to be able to book ahead, Paco Real has a website, and Paul the owner is friendly and happy to help.

The room I had was great, I paid $12 a night with my own bath (reduced rate for an extended stay). The bed was clean and comphy, the shower was hot. I have certainly stayed in worse places for more money. A downside that you cant escape no matter where you stay is the local church that broadcasts their sermons at 6 or 7am. I'm a tourist so I have no right to complain, but being woken up every morning to it is a minor annoyance. Again, doesn't matter where you stay, you will hear it.

There was a turtle in the small man made pond, WiFi on the property, a decent restaurant (great pizza!) and a suana for rent. Regarding the earlier comment someone made about spider webs in the sauna...I wonder what they expect when staying in a tropical lakeside environment? Yes, there are a few bugs...if you cant deal with that you should stay out of CA.

The food in the restaurant is very good, although the service is quite slow, its in line with the standards in Guatemala. Paul also owns Fe, a restaurant up the path, and the food there is very good as well.

Overall I think its a good place and I dont hesitate to recommend it! Excellent value for the price, and the only place in town (at time of writing) with WiFi. Also a night watchman.

Room Tip: private room with bath is a good option

After not a great experience in Antigua, I went to the lake and was so lucky to end up in San Marcos and at Paco Real. Paul the owner also has an amazing restaurant called Fé. I used to live in london and missed the curry and couldn't believe how good the curry was here. The pizza is made in a wood burning oven. The rooms are so cute and clean and peaceful. The only recommendation I would give is to ask for a room away from the broom closet. You can hear the cleaning crew early in the morning. The staff is a little hesitant and slow but I took that with a grain of salt as its a cultural experience and I'm not in NY anymore. It's good to slow down. Paul helped us book tours and hung out late at night sharing vast experiences and stories. He's very impressive and super hospitable. I really needed this week away and was sad to leave. On a side note the dogs are so cute and there is an orange tabby that will sleep with you in the hammock if you ask him nicely.
