Owner description: In 1875, Colonel Samuel West Peel built a marvelous villa tower Italiante mansion on the outskirts of Bentonville, Arkansas. It was a working farmstead surrounded by 180 acres of apple trees. The Peel Mansion is an outdoor museum of heritage roses, perennials, and native plants. Various vignette gardens are interlaced among curvilinear walks and large shade trees creating a most appropriate setting for this great historic building of northwest Arkansas. Also on the site is the pre-Civil War Andy Lynch log cabin which serves as a gatehouse and gift shop at the entrance to the grounds. The cbin was moved to The Peel Mansion property from Brightwater, Arkansas, just east of Rogers.

“Five dollars well spent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

The garden areas around the mansion are quite lovely, and contain many heirloom varieties of plants not usually seen anymore. Restoration of the house is going well and the visitor will get a very good idea of what life was like in the 19th century. Our tour guide was wonderful, and rightly proud of the efforts made by the volunteers on this historic site.

$5.00 fee to get a guided tour of this beautiful house. Great value. The docent was very knowledgable. Well worth a stop. Really enjoyed visiting with ladies working in the gift shop, too.

“Nice historic house gives more perspective to Bentonville history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

The house and grounds are located at the front of a Walmart store parking area. The property was originally a large farm owned by a family with important early political importance in the state of Arkansas. You need to enter one of the two driveways to the Walmart store to get to the property and there is a small parking area directly behind the house, which is not visible from the main road. There is a small log house that was given to the historical society and moved from another location which houses a nice gift shop and is where you go to begin the tour. Tours are guided only, every hour, by local volunteers. As a historic house fan, I was a little disappointed that more of the family's original furnishings were not still present. However, the house does a nice job of using period items and are quick to point out what is original and what is not. I would have liked more time to read some of the material that was included on labels in the "ice house". The gift shop has a nice selection including consignment items such as antique china and glass, linens, etc. I purchased a lovely early 20th c. Perfume atomizer. Prices were quite reasonable. There is a small garden.

“Amazing stories”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

The house is amazing in and of itself, but the history and stories that came with the tour were so rich, I must recommend everyone make a point of going to this.
