Stayed at Hotel Lee on several occasions a number of years ago while having some extensive dental work done in Algodones, Mexico (highly quality work) just over the border. Bob was a real pleasure to deal with... but he's not the owner anymore.
On this trip I couldn't get a firm commitment as to a reservation ("I'm sure we can find room for you," really isn't comforting when you're arriving after 11pm on Sunday night). When I arrived there was only about 3 cars parked out front but I was informed they had one room available. Strange. Upon entering my room I was hit by that sort of "smelly taste" of dust you get when a place has been closed up for a LONG time. I wasn't in the mood to go hunting for another motel so I dealt with it.
About 6am the yelling, cursing, and banging started. About the time I'd get up to investigate, it would end only to begin anew about a half hour later. Nobody was around when I was heading out to an appt. later that morning, and I arrived back at my room rather late that evening and retired - only to be awaken around 1am when the residences began stumbling in from area bars.
The unwanted early wake up routine fired up again around 6am, still no one to talk to at 10am when I was leaving, but while returning to the Hotel later that afternoon I realized person in need of some serious anger management was the current owner, Bill. He was screaming at a tenant (who also may have worked there, housekeeping?). Let me also note that while there were still no cars out front, but there was a considerable number of people always milling around the common-areas of the hotel. I get a feeling the place more closely resembles a "flop house" with a large majority of rooms now filled with long-term, low income tenants.
I'd had enough, and by this time was really in need of an uninterupted night's sleep. Looking for a budget alternative... check out the ReaLodge on 4th. A couple bucks more, but much cleaner AND quiet.
