I've been living in Phoenix for 1 year. We just got here from Chicago. People have been telling us it's the water, the lack of humidity, the heat that makes the food taste the way it does. We love to cook and eat and we have also been watching that show on BRAVO TV "Top Chef". This has made me even more aware of what to look for besides the taste of the food. We were too lucky to find the Red Raven. It is the best food I've had in Arizona.
The decor is very warm with a portion of the owners plate collection on the walls. The service was warm and prompt. The food was well seasoned and the presentation was pleasing. We started with the southwest corn chowder. Adding some meat would have made this one flavorful dish a meal! It was an explosion of flavor in my mouth. The second course was the ginger beef salad. These were some of the freshest greens I've ever had. Also the house dressing was great. the beef was perfect. the main course was red raven pasta, very flavorful and filling. the herb buttered bread eaten before the meal enabled us the take some salad and pasta to our hotel and we only got one of each!. The portions were very large. We guessed on the prices in our head and were very pleasantly surprised.
We have sampled a number of "gateway towns" to US national parks on our month-long trip, and other than some excellent BBQ at the Beartooth in West Yellowstone, this is the best small town eats we have had on our trip. Friendly ,attentive service, very nice salad and dressing, not too excessive portions, and decent wine choices to accompany well cooked and not-too-fancy entrees. A solid choice in a town that seems to offer mainly steak, BBQ and burgers otherwise.
We dined at the Red Raven during a two day stay in Williams while visiting the Grand Canyon. It was chosen based on TripAdvisor reviews from other people -- and we were not disappointed. Admittedly, there is really not too much offered in Williams, so we are comparing apples to oranges, but compared with our previous night's experience at the "Cruisers" restaurant -- the Red Raven is really the place to dine when you are in Williams. The owners are really making an effort to raise the bar in a little town that doesn't have too much to offer tourists, other than being one of the gateways into Grand Canyon national park! We enjoyed our dinner, it was prepared with attention to detail, and served with smiles and friendly conversation. Keep up the great work, Red Raven!
The Red Raven is a welcome newcomer to Williams, where choices are limited. The food is presented artistically, and is consistently excellent. I love the mahi-mahi wrap and the steak-and-tempura-shrimp dinner. The atmosphere is pleasing, with antiques on the walls, and the booths are very comfortable. I have eaten in every restaurant in Williams, and despite its current rating (due no doubt to its newness), Red Raven is the best.
