We stayed here on Sep 22 2007 while visiting the Grand Canyon.
It is only an hr drive to the canyon and some good restaurants here.It is a very nice little quaint route 66 town to visit.
The rooms were very clean and all were different.
$50 for a single(small) and $55 for a double.
The owner (Bob) was very pleasant .
The free breakfast set up in the morning was very good,
and much to choose from.
The music playing from the office was great, oldies from the 60's
You can't please everybody, but in todays prices $50 how can you complain....clean room and great free breakfast.
Great little town and hotel...........

I stayed int his hotel for two reasons, 1) I enjoy supporting small business owners over big corporations 2) I wanted to experience an authentic Route 66 motel.

Booking was easy, did it directly through the property owner over the phone.
Room was unlike any I had ever stayed in (i am used to standard holiday inn/best western rooms). Definitely had the feel of an old-school motel. Bathroom and bed were extremely clean. Carpet needs replacement, but it added to the authenticity.
Breakfast was veryyyyy nice the next morning. Had all types of things which we took with us and ate in the car.

Williams is a neat little place. I am happy I stayed there over the grand canyon/bigger town. Restaurants and shops are at walking distance.

Greetings, Bob, from Naples, Florida. We were in Williams one night last week and opted for this motel as we wanted the Rt. 66, 1950, experience. If you don't, then don't book it.
My dad took us on this route in 1960, so I remember these motor courts. This is one. Small, authentic room. Squeeky inner spring mattress was comfortable and we had a good night's rest. William is also a fun place IF YOU DO RETRO. If not, DON'T GO THERE. All the people are friendly and the food and entertainment were surprising.

Bottom line... be smart. Set your expectations like a grown up person and you will have fun. If you are a spoiled woosie-boy, then stay in Sedona or at the Canyon.

A Naples, Florida, Couple (as in $$$)

“The Grand Motel--motor travel as Grandpa knew it”

Grand Motel

Sep 3, 2007

"It ain't like the old days," Edmond O'Brian says at the conclusion of THE WILD BUNCH. "But it'll do."

This could sum up the Grand Motel. Grand it ain't, but it will do for basic lodging--bed, bath, potty, TV, A/C. As noted by previous reviewers, the rooms are very small, which is what one expects of a prewar motor court. I'd describe the decor as unintentional retro--not a conscious effort, but simply old stuff, which is how downscale '30's motor courts were probably furnished. Apparently there has never been any electrical upgrade, as the room featured a forest of extension cords for the electrical devices. There was a coffeemaker (with no coffee) and a refrigerator perched precariously on top of a too-small stand. Ice was available in the office.

The individual garage for each two room were a hoot--except that when they weren't full of junk, they were too small to take two modern cars. No big thing.

Management's main effort at retro was a speaker office blasting vintage pop music throughout the property. I couldn't help think of Janet Leigh in TOUCH OF EVIL, trapped in the Motel from Hell and bombarded by Dennis Weaver with nonstop rock and roll. After I checked in I had a couple predinner cocktails, which made both the music and the Grand more tolerable.

Route 66 parallels the railway line, but the only train noise I heard was the suppertime arrival of the Grand Canyon excursion train. During the summers the train is pulled by a steam engine which is worth a walk down to the depot--Homeric huffing and chuffing, and a melodious whistle loud enough for the TITANIC.

Williams itself is an interesting place, with enough tourist stuff to keep the town alive but not enough to hopelessly commercialize it. I had to pass on the two premier restaurants, Pancho McGillicudies and Cruiser's 66 Cafe--both had entertainers who substituted volume for talent, and whose amplified wailings and strummings I could literally hear blocks away. I didn't think my hearing could survive the time it would take to eat a meal.

The complimentary breakfast isn't put out until 8AM, which doesn't work too well for early departures. What one gets is primarily bagged pasteries, cereal, milk, coffee, and fruit--not haute cuisine, but more than enough to fill one up.

I'd suggest the Grand is a good example of how one generation's luxuries become the next generation's necessities. The original Route 66 motorists probably saw this place as a luxury. I suspect younger travelers, who expect everyplace they stay to have a fitness center will be less than thrilled with the Grand. I wanted a vintage Route 66 motel, and that's what I got, so I'm not complaining .

But the $55 per night I paid is twice what such downscale accomodations cost father east on I-40--although in fairness those places aren't close to the Grand Canyon. While the price is competitive with other places I looked at on old Route 66, those other places appeared to be considerable less deteriorated. For those visiting Williams I'd recommend shopping around.

I want to thank Zundapp for his review. In all fairness our rates are lower than most properties in Williams and our breakfast is the best you will find for no cost in Williams. The cost he quoted included our 11.237% tax rate. All rooms have a new electric a/c-heating unit, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, cable tv, and a telephone. Coffee packets are avialable on request in the office. I spend more than any other property in Williams on housekeeping. Our housekeepers make our 71 year old rooms look as new as they can. Our music is chosen to please the majority of the guests and to reflect the age of the property. If I only had a casino I too could charge $27 for a room. I know I need to paint the place but funds are lacking and the lowest quote was $14,000. Where else on Route 66 can you sit in a vintage metal lawn chair on a porch in front of your room, Drink, Eat and watch the world go by. Where else can you get a free breakfast on a patio and visit with other guests from all over the world. I believe we offer the best value for your stay in Williams.

This place is a dump. I stayed here because of all the wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor, which made it sound like kitchy Route 66 fun. I don't know who is writing those reviews, but they didn't stay at the same place I did, it seems.

My room was postage-stamp sized, furnished with "vintage" Goodwill rejects, and completely charm free. Bathroom tiles were separating from the wall, the splash guards at the corners of the tub were separating from the wall, the bathtub consisted of a vinyl insert that rippled underfoot, and the towels were stiff as boards. Complimentary shampoo and soap were large containers of products used by multiple guests.

That said, the place appeared clean and was relatively inexpensive. I would not stay here again and would not recommend this motel to anyone.

This is RoadDude's first tripadvisor review. I ask every guest if they have had any problems with the room and if their stay was good. I ask them to preview the room before checking in to prevent a unpleasent stay. Not everyone wants to stay in a older room. I have not had a problem report for over 4 months. This guest stayed in room #8. We have repaired the tile and splash guard issues he points out today. The room, closet, and bath measure 200 square feet. I measured it today. We are Old...First motor court built in Williams, built in 1936 after Route 66 was fully paved. Our furnature is mostly from a craftsman in SantaFe from the early 1950's. The dresser in room 8 was purchased at a antique store in Phoenix and we have not had a chance to refinish it. I do not know what the reviewer was looking for, obviously not a typical historic motel stay from the late1930's. Thats what we have plus most likely the best breakfast at a motel served on the patio with no additional cost. Our two housekeepers get paid by the hour and I tell them that I do not care how long it takes them to get the room clean. I recommend RoadDude stick to Holiday Inns or other high dollar newer lodging to stay at.
