We took the Grand Canyon Railway after a long cross country trip.
Pros: The Grand Canyon Railway has exceptional customer service, all staff members we spoke with were knowledgeable and attentive staff on your journey. All staff were kind, and assisted folks with any accommodation needed, working to meet the needs of all guests. For our family, after a long road trip to get to the Grand Canyon, it was fabulous to get on the train and have someone else transport us. The staff at the Grand Canyon Railway really strive to make your entire journey a positive experience, providing information about the area, fun activities, recommendations for places to eat, hike, etc. They provide entertainment including the pre-train ride shoot-out show, entertainers wandering the cars singing and playing music throughout the journey, and the train "robbery" on the way back.
Cons: The train journey takes more time at a maximum of 40-45 miles per hour. This was ok with us - again happy not to be driving ourselves after a long road trip, but it would have much faster to drive by car. The ride is not as scenic as we had hoped/expected, so the 2+ hour journey seemed a bit tedious. There are no views of the Canyon, really just plains and desert, with a bit of forest land toward the end. Time limits - While we knew this going into our trip, if you take a round trip one day journey by train, this limits your time at the Canyon to whatever you can see in 3 hours. There is plenty to see very close to the train depot, but if you are looking for a longer hike, and also need to eat, etc., the time-frame available can be limiting. While we include the entertainment provided in the "pros", the shoot-out and train robbery are a bit cheesy, but good for kids.
