We arrived in Williams on an unusually rainy day in August, aware that we couldn't check in until 4pm (most of Williams takes a Siesta bizarrely) we wandered around the few open shops, a cute gift shop run by a Brit selling imported British tat, just what you need when you've travelled all that way from the UK! And a very odd 2nd hand bookstore although you couldn't get near the books because the few locals who were sitting around the shop drinking coffee and nattering had parked their bikes in front of the shelves, odd to say the least.
At four we entered the bakery and were greeted by a lovely friendly helpful lady who told us a bit about the hotel and escorted us to our room.
First impressions were fab, the bakery is decked out with pics of how it looked as a bordello and an array of souvenirs relating to the towns wild history, some t'shirts and books. The building maintains loads of original features and all of charm. The only thing it lacked (surprisingly for a bakery) was baked goods, the range wasn't huge.
We were escorted to our room, The Best Gals room, the main suite at the front of the hotel, it was stunning, gorgeous period features and a real old world charming feel. Made up of the main bedroom with a lovely comfortable big double bed, a small bathroom and a seating area with sofa, traditional lamps and dresser.
The room was immaculately clean and very comfortable. We were given a key to the main B&B door (next to the bakery entrance) to come and go as we pleased, directed to a library of books which featured the Red Garter and the phone which had a list of local numbers and those of the owners and advised if we needed anything to give them a call.
I spent the afternoon reading the various books which featured the B&B which included a fabulous book about women in the days of the wild west, especially the types of women that would live in a bordello, and books of haunted properties.
Williams comes to life in the evening with some lovely restaurants and cool bric a brac shops as well as some tourist shops. A free wild west show is staged in the street and it was highly amusing if a little Disney.
We returned to the hotel at around 11 and settled in for the night, as there is no air conditioning we closed the windows and put the ceiling fans on which kept the room very comfortable, at around 3am i awoke, certain i had heard noises in the room and could see movement i woke my husband (to be, at that time) he managed to convince me it was just shadows and i went back to sleep.
When we got up at 8,30 the next morning i discovered one of the windows in the living area was open, i'm sure i closed them all before we went to sleep........
Breakfast was lovely, i had peaches and cream cheese struedel (mmmm mouth watering at the memory) and a fruit plate with lovely fresh coffee.
Breakfast was served by the owner who was hugely knowledgeable about the town and the surrounding area. We chatted with the other guests and it was very relaxed.
Night two at the B&B was equally comfortable and checkout was easy.
Parking was free and directly opposite the hotel.
Williams was charming, a lady in a bric a brac shop made me a veil for our wedding which was taking place the following week in Vegas, from a Tiara and some Toile which she hand sewed, and then only charged for the Tiara, it was perfect, exactly what i'd been looking for and the lady was so sweet about it.
I would recommend Williams to anyone and if you are going there you have to stay at the Red Garter, the cutest B&B in the world, with free ghost, believe me it's haunted, but in a very pleasant way!
I wouldn't really call it a bakery although the limited baked goods they did have tasted fabulous, i think they are missing out on a fair bit of trade by not turning the downstairs into a traditional wild west bar but if they did it would have an impact on their guests so maybe it's respectful that they haven't.
We loved it, go there now, or next time you are heading to Arizona.
