“Great value hotel near South Rim entrance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Great location. Great value. Friendly service. I definitely agree with the other reviewers when they say the breakfast area needs to be bigger for the amount of people. Maybe extended hours or some to go boxes, I gladly would've dined in my room. The hotel is a little dated but clean.

Our room was comfortable, the breakfast was great and the price was fair. The only complaint I had was that the normal rooms do not have a microwave or a frig. Lots of fast food restaurants nearby. The hot tub was small but nice. The pool was nice but the water seemed cold to me.

This is the second time that we have stayed here and as before we found it an excellent place to stay for visiting the Grand Canyon. Parking in the car park is a bit of a lottery though and you will be lucky to find a space in the evening. Check in on the front desk went smoothly and our room was pleasant, if a little old looking. We would be happy to stay there again, should we ever venture back to see the Grand Canyon again.

We've stayed at this HIE off and on over the past 7 years. During our stay this past weekend, we were pleased to find the hotel is maintaining its quality. The staff was efficient - the room was clean - the breakfast was plentiful and tasty (hot cinnamon rolls, bacon, eggs, and the usual continental items). We stayed in the annex building in a mini suite. It was sparsely furnished (so it was not aesthetically appealing) but that left plenty of space for our travel items. Was nice to have a separate sitting area from the bedroom.

Value is good in off season and only 1 mile from the entrance to GCNP. However, in peak season, the HIE rates match the rates at the lodges inside the park. We prefer to stay in the park and wake up to deer and elk right outside our window. But during off season, it's worth staying at the HIE and driving into the park. It's a tradeoff that we take because we are able to visit the park often. If this is your only time to see the Grand Canyon, we recommend you stay inside the park!

Room Tip: Mini suite in the annex building are newer and quieter.

My overall rating of the hotel is Very Good. Unfortunately upon arrival I was early being just after 1pm and checkin isn't until 4pm. The receptionist who was busy doing filing finally acknowleded me asked my name then checked the reservation then started the usual company spool. Stated that check-in was at 4pm and check-out was 11am. She then stated that my room wasn't ready and I should go away and come back in an hour or two. She then went back to her filing and totally dismissed me standing there with my jaw on the floor. Luckily when I arrived back later she was gone and the whole process was much nicer. Overall still a good experience despite the rude receptionist at first.

Would've given 5 stars if the internet wasn't so very slow! I need internet to do remote work, and it's important to me that it's reasonable fast - the internet at this hotel was dial-up speed and many things timed out before they could load. Otherwise, this is a very clean hotel with a good selection at the free breakfast.

Excellent staff, courteous and helpful. It was our first time at the Grand Canyon and the pleasant lady at the front desk spent several minutes with us giving directions, advice, restaurant recommendations. We stayed in a king suite and the room was quiet, clean and quaint. Wish we could have stayed more than one night, but we do plan to return and will definitely choose this hotel again.
