“Beautiful setting, location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

This hotel is located right by the water. Room 8 or 10 have the most beautiful views. They do get a bit noisy at night as people go by. The hotel is a little bit out of the way from the center of town, the walk to it is quite interesting, you cannot drive a car, maybe a tuk tuk can manage the narrow streets. We chose to walk, it's about 10mn walk from the center of town. The hotel is run by Canadians from Quebec. The food is decent, the hotel has a beautiful terrace for sun bathing and a hot and cold water jacuzzis. A good spot to relax between travel.

Right on the lake and a bit out of the way. To get there from the Panajachel dock, one must turn left, walk past one block, and turn down a narrow and very uninviting alley. This alley is the entry into the gringolandia part of San Pedro, and at its end is the entry path to Mikaso. Walk past the gardens and into the entry with its path lined by bouganvillae and banana trees.

The hotel room we had was spectacular, on the corner overlooking the lake. Sizeable, clean and comfortable. The velcro misquito mesh along the windows was a great idea, as it allowed us to open up the windows and enjoy the breezes of the lake. The service was good (though the quality of help at the reception desk was highly dependent on who was there), the amenities were excellent (though the hot tub was not that warm, but still, it was a hot tub) and the restaurant was decent enough. For meals, we preferred to sample the restaurants in town.

While it is the most expensive hotel in town, that does not mean that it was expensive. It was only 100 quetzales more for the room than other places, but was in another dimension in regards to quality of accommodation and ambience.

Room Tip: For budget travelers, they have rooms with no lake view and rooms with shared bathrooms.

I spent a few days in this hotel in a room looking over Lake Atitlan. The view was great and the natural surrounding too, but the hotel overall did not do it for me. This is a very primitive or low key place in Guatemala and maybe I was expecting more. For sure there are people that probably like this way of tourism, but not me. My room overlooked the lake and it was sunny by 6am with no darken shades!! The native locals would go to the lake to do laundry and their personal hygiene really early in the morning. I was not thrilled of looking at this. The hotel service was basic, though plates and glasses used by guests were kept on the hallways for days and nobody would pick them up. There was no AC no fan no ventilation unless u opened the windows. The bathroom really small with no ventilation and a toilet almost inside the shower!!! Overall nature is great, but the hotel can be used just to sleep and wake up really early!!! There are other better kept places nearby. U will be in a Mayan place in the 21st century.

We are sorry that your stay with us was not as expected. Maybe a room with a view was not what you needed. It is true that the sun comes in those rooms early and local people are in the lake very early also. For the service, we are now more attentive with the cleaning staff, to make sure that hallways are always clean.

Stayed at mikaso for one night only. It is located on the quiet side of San Pedro away from the noisy streets. The room was very decent, if you pay a little extra you can get direct lake view. Internet service is only available in the restaurant ( has amazing view) and it is open from 7 am to 9pm. Try the hot chocolate with milk, it is delicious. The more expensive rooms have hot water shower, however cheaper rooms have an electric shower that is barely warm.

Hotel provides free use of 2 hot tubs for overnight guests. Overall, good value for the money!

We could see the hotel from the water upon arriving in San Pedro, but it is a little hard to find without help. There is a long path down to the hotel and there isn't much of an entry presense. The hotel was very busy, so we had to wait around on the dirty old couches while a room was cleaned.
Our second floor room, #13, was at the back and had a view of an overgrown vacant lot and the hotel garbage cans. We were not impressed. At $45, this was the poorest value hotel we stayed at in our month long trip through Guatemala.
The room was a good size with two beds and a place to put our packs and there was a place to hang clothes. We got one thread bare towel each. There was no bathmat, so everytime one went in the shower there was water everywhere. Of course we never used that much because we only ever had cold water. We had the staff come twice to fix it, but it did not improve. There was poor lighting, and the mirror was to far away to to see anything in. The room needs a paint job and there was absolutely no decoration on the walls. It just seemed grubby.
The terrace is nice with good views of the lake and surrounding mountains, but a lot of the deck furniture is in need of repair. One good thing in their favour was the restuarant. The food was very good.
There are better hotel choices in town and I wouldn't reccommed this establishement.

We are sorry that your stay was not as expected. We are working on better signs for direction to put in town. The sofas at the reception are now recovered with a nice typical blanket and we also have someone at the reception from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. We also revised all showers to make sure they are hot.

We stayed here for one night. The views from the hotel' terrace are beautiful, the food was pretty decent (mostly Western style food), and it's located close to Santiago pier. We stayed in the room with no view - it was quite dark, you could hear any slightest noise - so the walls are very thin. When we arrived around 1:30PM, our room wasn't ready for another hour. The hotel itself gives off a vibe like its best days are behind. I think if the owners upgrade the upkeep of the hotel and make a bit more homely, it would definitely go a long way.

Check in is usually at 2:00 pm. In high season, sometimes it is a little harder to have rooms ready for that time, but we are doing our best to have them ready on time. We are sorry that you had to wait. As we survive to the last rainy season we decide to fix more things at the hotel and we hope that mother-nature will let us receive customers for more years.

This hotel was probably the best hotel in San Pedro but the rising water level is slowly changing the deal. Indeed have the lake waters started rising for 3 years now at an alarming rate and when I visited it already swallowed a couple of buildings of the hotel forcing the owner to move the dorm from a nice location on the first floor to the ground floor where the view is not as nice.
That said the place is still a great place to stay with breathtaking views on the lake and surrounding mountains either from the balcony of the ground floor, the massive first floor terrace or the top floor terrace. Two free-to-use working hot tubs allows to enjoy reasonably-priced drinks or food from the bar/restaurant before sunbathing on the deck chairs.
Regarding the rooms the dorm is clean and the beds are comfortable but it lacks windows and feels a little cramped. Rooms look way better but I didn't try them.

Room Tip: If you can afford a room, go for it as the dorm is not the best pick here...
