“Room right on Lake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

At a moderate price, you can have a room with water on 3 sides, watch the ladies washing their clothers, catch the early am fishermen in their dugouts, and watch the sunrise. Room good size and clean, decent restaurant (Poutine?) and free computer/wifi. Quit and tranquil, yet a 5 minute walk from the madness, bars etc.

“Nice Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

This is a great place to stay in San Pedro. Separated but not far! Great food also. Just the perfect spot! Like in every other low budget hotel in Guatemala, bring your ear plugs!! In the case of Mikaso is people passing outside your room the ones that make noise!

Room Tip: I beleive the best rooms are in the second floor; Less people walk outside your room, so it´s quiete...

“Beautiful setting, nice rooms, great base in San Pedro La Laguna”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

I usually stay with local families when I'm in San Pedro La Laguna but made reservations at Hotel Mikaso when I had a group of friends visiting with me. We had 3 lake view rooms in a row and the little single room nearby. That gave us our own beautiful patio area with plenty of seating and wonderful views, especially early in the day. We shopped at the produce market and Tienda Aracely and used the nice share kitchen to prepare breakfasts and lunches. There's wifi in the restaurant area and on the top deck. The staff was accommodating and stored our luggage for us since we were leaving San Pedro hours after check out time.

Although it wasn't a problem for us, do note that you can't drive to the door of the hotel; it's a block or so from the nearest street. I was surprised that they didn't accept credit cards at this time. Also, the nearest part of the lake has lots of seaweed. For us, that added to the interest; we enjoyed watching locals collect it for drying and the herons and egrets feeding in it.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms cost more but we loved having a nice deck area right by our rooms as a gathering...

“Spectacular views of Lake Atitlan!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

In July, 2012 had 10 most enjoyable days at Hotel Mikaso. Loved the location of the hotel perfectly situated by the lake with expansive views of lake, lush mountains and the towering volcanoes. Truly spectacular! And yes, it just may be one of the most beautiful lake settings on the planet.

Some nice colonial architectural touches, very simple, clean rooms, small bathrooms, hot water 9 days out of 10. The wide veranda outside rooms 8, 9 and 10 with comfy outdoor furniture was a favorite spot. Room 8 maybe not for light sleepers due to local women doing wash in the lake a few feet away. It was the loud chatting that was irritating at times.

Do not be put off when arriving by the walkway to the hotel located between 2 cornfields. It's an entertaining piece of local color. This is a small rural community and these folks live on corn. Stand on the corner and you can easily get a tuk tuk from the hotel to the docks or the center of town. We arrived by tuk tuk with our luggage placed on top. Do NOT try to walk to the hotel from the dock, if you have luggage, backpack would be fine.

Mikaso is owned by a family from Quebec; son, Miguel oversees the hotel and sometimes cooks; he is lots of fun! The upstairs restaurant with terrific views on 3 sides and high-beamed ceiling and fireplace is the center of activity and good wifi connection. Daniela and Helene are delightful hostesses. Service is quick and always pleasant. A rather international menu, very good breakfasts and varied choices for lunch and dinner. It's a friendly atmosphere and we enjoyed talking with a number of guests. We love to meet fellow travelers, and met lovely folks.

Mikaso Hotel was an excellent value. It is just 2 blocks from Escuela Espanola de San Pedro; we received a discount at the hotel for being students at this school. And if you are looking for a fine Spanish school, THIS escuela may be one of the best in Guatemala. We would consider returning to both the hotel and the school our next trip to Guatemala.

Room Tip: Rooms 8,9 and 10 have views and great veranda. We liked 9 which was quiet. 10 has best views but s...

“Nice clean hostel, nice views, nice terrace, decent restaurant a little bit pricier than other places in town. Don't buy their o”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012 via mobile

This is a nice hostel. The rooms (even the dorm) are all nice, there is an awesome terrace with great views of the Lake. There is a jacuzzi, a pool table, board games, a kitchen and a good restaurant. There is no TV or WIFI (at least there wasn't when we were there).
From speaking to other people in San Pedro I get the impression that this is the best hostel in San Pedro BUT it's also the most expensive so if you're on a budget you can easily find a room for half the price elsewhere. And there are plenty of choices in touristy San Pedro. The hostel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the main pier in San Pedro so to get here you may prefer to take a tuk tuk or taxi boat to the other closer pier.
Aside from the comparatively higher cost, the only other negative to staying here is with booking tours. The tour agent that the hostel recommends is actually 50% more expensive than all the other agencies in town. Plus the tour agent guy (who wears an official looking white tour rep shirt) is kind of a pest in that he will probably be on your case the minute you arrive at the hostel even coming into the hostel restaurant the first day you arrive pushing tours onto you. Advice: get prices from at least 3 other agencies in town before choosing a tour. San Pedro is actually a very cheap place for doing tours so you may be surprised how cheap it is to go hiking or kayaking etc.
If it wasn't for the annoying tour rep pest I would probably have given this place a 5.
