In July, 2012 had 10 most enjoyable days at Hotel Mikaso. Loved the location of the hotel perfectly situated by the lake with expansive views of lake, lush mountains and the towering volcanoes. Truly spectacular! And yes, it just may be one of the most beautiful lake settings on the planet.
Some nice colonial architectural touches, very simple, clean rooms, small bathrooms, hot water 9 days out of 10. The wide veranda outside rooms 8, 9 and 10 with comfy outdoor furniture was a favorite spot. Room 8 maybe not for light sleepers due to local women doing wash in the lake a few feet away. It was the loud chatting that was irritating at times.
Do not be put off when arriving by the walkway to the hotel located between 2 cornfields. It's an entertaining piece of local color. This is a small rural community and these folks live on corn. Stand on the corner and you can easily get a tuk tuk from the hotel to the docks or the center of town. We arrived by tuk tuk with our luggage placed on top. Do NOT try to walk to the hotel from the dock, if you have luggage, backpack would be fine.
Mikaso is owned by a family from Quebec; son, Miguel oversees the hotel and sometimes cooks; he is lots of fun! The upstairs restaurant with terrific views on 3 sides and high-beamed ceiling and fireplace is the center of activity and good wifi connection. Daniela and Helene are delightful hostesses. Service is quick and always pleasant. A rather international menu, very good breakfasts and varied choices for lunch and dinner. It's a friendly atmosphere and we enjoyed talking with a number of guests. We love to meet fellow travelers, and met lovely folks.
Mikaso Hotel was an excellent value. It is just 2 blocks from Escuela Espanola de San Pedro; we received a discount at the hotel for being students at this school. And if you are looking for a fine Spanish school, THIS escuela may be one of the best in Guatemala. We would consider returning to both the hotel and the school our next trip to Guatemala.
Room Tip: Rooms 8,9 and 10 have views and great veranda.
