A group of three colleagues, we discovered Villa Sumaya on Traveladvisor.com and found the guest house/retreat center a perfect match for our needs. We had been traveling and working in El Salvador and Guatemala for a couple of weeks, working with teachers and discovering more about this generous and beautiful part of the world and took a few days at the end of the working trip to write reports, and to see the Lake region.
Wendy and Lizzy and all the staff at Villa Sumaya handled our reservations and arrival so that even with piles of baggage (thanks to the working aspect of our trip) we made it to the guest house easily --without exception, all the staff worked hard to make our stay and excursions out into the lake communities an amazing retreat and revival for mind, body and spirit.
Our bedrooms in the Maya Rose building were incredible, comfortable and had a view of the volcanos and lake from both inside and outside. The food was healthy, beautifully served and varied throughout our stay, taking full advantage of the organic farms that Wendy uses to source her vegetables -- and since Guatemala can be an iffy place to eat salads and the like, we were ravenous for the healthy greens that we were served!
We arrived at the end of a very rough wet season in Guatemala -- mud slides and other wet weather damage from the previous few months was obvious everywhere. Villa Sumaya was at the end of an ambitious clean-up, too. But we felt safe, protected and, by any standard, our accommodations were welcoming, soothing, beautiful, personal and art-filled. No, this isn't an anonymous hotel room with invisible service, with impersonal amenities. (No AC, for example--BECAUSE you don't need it! No other hotel on the lake offers it either, I think...) Villa Sumaya is a heart-filled place for work, play, reflection and restoration on all levels! We wrote, took a hike to the quiet village above, traversed the lake on a private launch tour, bought beautiful handicrafts and paintings in Santiago and San Juan and shared stories and experiences with the owner and the staff.
