My husband and I spent a week at villa Sumaya in February. I cannot express how deeply relaxing it was to be there. The entire resort is just stunning to behold. Lots of hand-woven textiles adorning furniture, lots of flowers and shrubs, all attractively laid out, with multiple cosy spots to lay in a hammock or read a book in a lounger. Our room was perfect and private with lovely views. Two volcanic mountains across the lake are visible from nearly everywhere. The resort is right on the shore of Lake Atitlan, which well deserves the Most Beautiful Lake Ever Award. We found getting to and from the resort by local shuttle boat taxis to be a charming experience. We also enjoyed access to the vibrant Guatemalan culture around the lake. We hiked along the edge of the lake to tiny villages and bargained in the market in Panajachel. We are not vegetarians, and had planned to add the chicken or fish option to our meals occassionally. But the food was so well-balanced, nutritious, delicious and filling that we never did. We felt so healthy, eating fresh, locally grown food, savoring the fresh air and exercise. The chef is amazing. Each meal i(all served buffet-style) included a multitude of choices, with a large salad always accompanying the lunch and dinner. We ordered the online cookbook that shares many of the recipes!! But the very best part of Villa Sumaya is the management (Wendy and Liz) and the staff. The gentle, nurturing people who give you all the space you may need or want, yet somehow are always available to help and guide you whenever you ask. The massage and yoga specialists are superb. We went for a personal retreat to relax, refresh and rejuvinate and it was just the perfect place to be. I cannot recommend villa Sumaya highly enough!! We will definitely return again and again.
