“Relax by the Lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

A well thought out retreat set right on Lake Atitlan. Packages for Gropius or personal retreats are generous. Beautiful yoga studios. Fair trade store stocked with high quality crafts to benefit local groups.

“Beautiful retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

We came as two girls on a "personal retreat" for just under a week and were quite happy with the experience. It was our first time in Guatemala but we have been to Central/South America a few times. I think the resort caters to groups, but does do personal retreats when they have the space. There was 1 large group and several "personal" retreats when we were there.

Pros:
- beautiful property
- nice rooms
- good service - we arranged our package through Lizzy who was very helpful in putting together a combination that worked well for us
- transport - our airport transportation was arranged for us and went quite smoothly
- vegetarian food - I'm a bit of a carnivore so I wasn't sure how this would work for me, but the food was actually quite decent and if you're a vegetarian you'll be even happier
- hot tub - solar heated and was really hot well into the evening (you can add cold water if it's too hot)
- yoga - Sarah is the instructor for personal retreats and she's great
- massage
- kayak - they can arrange kayaks for you, paddling around the lake is really beautiful
- location - not in a town so you need to catch a boat anywhere off the resort (it's around $3 one-way to Panajachel on public boat or $20 per boat on a private boat), which is either a pro or a con (pro - quieter, safer; con - less convenient)

Cons
- it's probably expensive by Guatemalan standards, but you get what you pay for and I am pretty happy with the price for what I got

“Really wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

I was a solo traveler and had an amazing experience at villa Sumaya. Wonderful practitioners, from Sarah who led my yoga practice, all the excellent massage therapists ( I saw Robert and Tracey) and Kirsten who was so wonderful I saw her twice for energy healing. The place has such a fantastic energy about it and the fact that it is only accessible by boat makes it feel secluded, while you can still travel easily to all of the wonderful towns nearby. I left feeling refreshed and reinvigorated. What an experience!

“Enchanting beautiful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

You can believe everything you see at Villa Sumaya's website. The facility is wonderful, the staff helpful and friendly, the food is fabulous (coming from a former non vegetarian) -- and the lake and volcanoes provide an atmosphere that is peaceful and life changing.

Room Tip: Stayed in the newer facility with a 3rd story double room -- the view was wonderful -- the doors to...

“A Miraclous Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Just return from a 1 week yoga retreat at Villa Sumaya. Went last week of January. 17 participants.
Never been to Guatemala. I had high hopes for the trip but Villa Sumaya was fabulous beyond my expectations. It's the kind of place that is the labor of love of the person/people who run it. Every detail is done to pefection. They take care of you from the moment you land in Guatemala City. The accomodations, landscaping, site location, food, all fabulous. Vegetarian cuisine. I am not a vegetarian but I could be if I could eat food like that .
This is high season. They had many healing therapists on site that were the best I have ever experienced. Massage and all different kinds of healing techniques. Wasn't planning on doing much of that but could not let the opportunity pass. All the members of my group reported only incredibly wonderful experiences with all the different therapists.
Lake Atttillan is one of the most beautful, interesting places on earth. Can't wait to g back.

Room Tip: all rooms great, they will help you select the room that will be right for you. some are bigger, so...
