Laguna Lodge is all that is says and more. A stunning location on the lake, incredible (!!!) food, breathtaking views and impeccable service. The spa is to die for, designed in pebbles in a little alcove of hanging vines. My only wish was that we had stayed longer!

This hotel was exactly what I was looking for, a breathtakingly beautiful boutique hotel set on a private mountainside on the shores of the famous Lake Atitlan. The owners are the most interesting and kind people I have ever met. Their staff is completely indigenous to the area and are treated with the utmost care and respect. They in turn pass this attention and love to each hotel guest. I can't describe in words how delicious their completely vegetarian cuisine is. For anyone who questions how filling a four course vegetarian meal would be, let's just say I could hardly move from my chair. Every item they serve is grown on the mountainside adjacent to the hotel. One more thing I would like to add is that although this hotel does not advertise itself as catering to families, the owners treated my son like one of their own.

I have just returned from Guatemala - having stayed at the Laguna Lodge for 2 nights with my mother and a friend. The hotel really is deserving of a full 5 stars on all counts - we were treated with such warmth and kindness, and as the hotel is relatively small - only 6 rooms, we had fantastic close attention to our needs during the stay. The hotel staff, other than the owners - who have lived in the area for many years however - are all local, which really added to the pleasure of the stay.
The hotel has obviously worked very hard to curate the right atmosphere too - it's a great mix of beautiful isolation, but with the warmth of a family atmosphere to return to after a day of sightseeing. I would recommend you eat there in the evening at least once, as lounging around the bar, talking to the other guests before dinner was such a pleasure.
The food is good, and different to what you will have if you eat locally in that it's relatively international, and entirely vegetarian - which we found to be a nice change.
The views from the bedrooms are exquisit, and I think I lay on my bed for at least a few hours just watching the changing light across the lake.
Lastly, the owners, Mayah and Jeffro are fantastic, they paid attention to us and very helpful in their advice on where to go in the local area. Being experienced travellers themselves, they encouraged us to take local public boats (a great experience) and explore the surrounding lake-side villages. However for those less comfortable with this, they have also a great private boat service, which although pricey is still good value when you compare it to what you would anticipate paying in the US.
The bedrooms with their private balconies are incredible - spacious and beautifully decorated, with of course a view you just can't believe. Lastly, the environmentally conscious nature of the hotel is really great to see - no pointless plastic shampoo bottles - just simple refillable jars.
Lastly, arriving at the hotel is easy. Although you actually get there by boat (such a joy), the trip to Panajachael is painless from the surrounding cities. Phone ahead and the hotel will send their private launch to get you. Once you're there, make sure you visit the villages of San Juan, San Marcos and Santiago - all very different, and very very special.

Although we only stayed one night at this lovely resort, we had the most amazing time and loved every minute of it. The staff were accommodating and very friendly. The room was very clean, modern and had an amazing view. The food was also fabulous, especially as we are vegetarians. I cannot recommend this hotel enough to anyone who wishes to stay. I do not have any bad things to say and would definately come here again, only for longer!!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon in Guatemala and stayed in the Quetzal Suite for 5 nights. Our room was beautiful, the outdoor sitting area had an amazing view, and sitting out there hearing the sounds of waves crashing onto the hotel was so relaxing. One bit of advice is to bring warm clothes just in case. It was a bit cooler with some wind that I didn't expect, maybe we went at a bad time, I dont know. I didn't realize Lake Atitlan was 5000 ft above sea level, it was a little cool in our room at night, but not too bad and they had a fireplace in the restaurant which was nice. During the day it was nice and I wore shorts and tank tops. We enjoyed our time there, it was very romantic. Go visit Lake Atitlan, it gorgeous and full of mayan culture and do a tour of the villages, its very interesting.

Beautiful boutique lodge on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. See three volcanoes lining the lake from your bed. Built and run by Kiwi expats, (who even MADE the bricks by hand) every detail is personal, warm and friendly. A unique Vegetarian menu was fabulous even for a NON vegetarian like me. Views from everywhere you look on the lake in the Guatemalan mountains.

I think it is perfect base to explore the magnificent lake Atitlan.

It all went perfect. We were met at Panajachel and after short 10mins boat trip were welcomed at the lodge, which looks very nice from the water. Volcanos were not seen in the mist of the lake at this point, and we almost lost our hope to see them, but all the mist was gone by sunset, and at sunrise the skyline was also clear.

I do not have words to write about the view of the lake and volcanos - it must be seen.

We took lake-view suite which was very large, comfortable room with both modern and traditional design. We especially liked the design of our room and hotel - there many unique things, i would say even artifacts thanks to the owner who it feels contributed part of her soul into this wonderful creation. By the way, room has vary large balcony, which can fit 4 people or more with panoramic view over lake.

We had very nice romantic dinner at the hotel, nice swim in the warm and clear waters of the lake and short walk up the hill in the morning to get even bigger view of the lake and surroundings.

We stayed one night there as we had only 4 days / 3 nights in Guatemala which was enough to explore main highlights (Antigua, Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Tikal), but if we get our ticket to come there next time I would stay on the lake for at least 5-7 days as there are many opportunities like exploring different villages on the shores, kayaking and high altitude diving.

Many thanks for people who design, create and manage such cosy boutique hotels - you create very positive emotions so that I would never want to stay in resort-like hotel!

Keep going!
