“Excellent time at Jinetes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Had a great time at Jinetes de Osa. The location is stunningly beautiful. There is a very long hiking trail right from the resort along the coast that leads one to find numerous private beaches and explore the rainforest. unbelievable natural biodiversity is found everywhere. Corcovado national park is well worth the visit, as is the night tour and horseback riding. Scuba diving and snorkelling at Cano Island, especially when the visibility is good, are exceptional - highly recommended. Exploring the river and bay area with the kayak is also a great time, one can potentially reach the Sirena river and explore quite a ways from the hotel this way. Food and service were excellent. Room was of the simplest type, and was modest and comfortable. This is a great location and hotel for nature lovers and adventure lovers.

We just spent a week in Jinetes De Osa and it was a once in lifetime experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. The hotel totally exceeded our expectations and the staff was more than welcoming! Fair warning: this review is going to be a bit lengthy, as I have a lot of positive thoughts to share.

The hotel is centrally located as far as proximity to town goes. Most tours operate out of Jinetes which makes it extremely convenient to stay here, especially for a night tour (we met a couple who got lost trying to find their hotel in the dark). The horseback riding tour to the waterfall is a must. You get to swim in the refreshing pools at the base of the falls, and we saw tons of wildlife on the way. The Corcovado trip to Sirena is also a necessity if you're into wildlife. The hike itself is very easy, try to ask for Orlando as a guide- he's extremely knowledgeable and very personable. Snorkeling at Cano Island was also fabulous, along with the night tour.
All of the food was phenomenal, we had no reason to eat elsewhere (unless you want to sample other menus, as we did on several occasions).

We spent the first few nights in a superior suite cabin (one of the 3 newest rooms at the hotel.) They are situated on a hill, 181 steps up (this can get tiring), but with the best views of Drake Bay. The other major benefit to these suites include the AC (which isn't offered in the other rooms).

The other nights we spent in a regular superior room, which was still very nice. All of the windows are screened and despite the lack of AC, the fans and ocean breeze still make things quite comfortable. The view isn't quite as nice, but you do get to hear the waves crashing on the beach, which is a wonderful sound to fall asleep to.

Tips:
Room 11 has the best view hands down, at the expense of 181 steps. The suites are also the most private
WiFi is available in the lodge and room 1
Close-toed sandals or water shoes are a must
A waterproof camera is highly recommended
It seemed everywhere in Drake Bay accepted US dollars

Very good option in Drake Bay. The room was very comfortable, breakfast was delicious and plentiful. We went diving with them and the guides were nice, the equipment was a little bit old, but fine. The staff was always very helpful.

My son & I stayed at Hotel Jinetes de Osa for 3 nights at the tail end of our trip in Costa Rica. We were in one of the new rooms with air at the top of the hill. These rooms are brand new & are beautiful, with fantastic views of the ocean & surrounding area. Note there are 180 steps up & back down to these rooms - dont forget anything! The hotel is at the far end of the town & requires a short hike to get to which gives it an exclusive out of the way feel. The dinners & lunches are set up to encourage guests to interact & you cant help but have made new friends by the time you leave. The staff went way beyond to make our stay great including booking tours they dont represent & taxis when we were short on cash (remember no bank in Drake). This is definitely the best value in Drake Bay for a nice hotel .

Room Tip: Loved the hilltop rooms but be prepared for the climb!

We moved here for two nights after discovering that our previous choice of accommodations had no running water. I had attempted to book us into Jinetes prior to our departure from the U.S but they did not have availability for all of our dates.

We found them immediately after our arrival to Drake Bay whilst walking along the beach. Had a drink at their little bar and a lovely chat with one of their volunteers, Kate, who was such a great spokes-person for Jinetes that we joined hotel guests for lunch and dinner on our first night in Drake Bay. When we subsequently discovered the extent of the water problems at our guest-house, we had no hesitation in coming to Jinetes. They were so helpful and accommodating. Rolando, their in-house guide, was an absolute gem, finding us a perfect room facing the water and getting us settled in as quickly as possible. We learned a great deal from him about the region and his culture.

Jinetes serves meals in a community-style dining room - meaning that you sit at long tables with other guests. What a perfect way to have your guests become friends and be more like family than strangers staying in the same hotel! We met wonderful people and formed great friendships because of this setup so we are very grateful for this dining style.

The layout of our room was lovely and very clean although the hotel is in need of some repair and polishing-up. The bed/pillows were comfortable and the ceiling & floor fans kept us cool in the evenings.

The meals were a mix of local & international cuisine - all very tasty with perfect portion sizes. The breakfast is quite elaborate with fruits, bread, egg station and a variety of juices, coffees & teas. The fresh fruit juices with lunch & dinner were much appreciated as was the large bottled water station in the dining area where we can refill our water bottles throughout the day.
The hotel staff were very professional in offering numerous services such as laundry and they cleaned my husband's dive gear at no charge even though we had previously booked our dives with another dive center. Absolutely excellent customer service all around!

The constant presence of volunteers who will connect you with a manager immediately to resolve any issue gives a great sense of confidence that these hosts care about your experience staying with them.

The restaurant and bar face the ocean and the sunsets are breathtaking in the evenings. Above the restaurant, there is a little lounge with hammocks and lounging chairs which we made use of to read and relax on a day when we were not feeling well. Carlos, the general manager, allowed us the use of their laptop so we could use internet to advise family of our change of accommodations. Lovely, helpful fellow who is always available to answer questions or offer guidance. There is truly not one thing we didn't like about our stay at Jinetes!

If you are in a rush when you depart, simply ask the manager to have your bill ready for you by a certain time. That is the only thing we found a little slow.
There is no question that we would recommend Jinetes to anyone visiting this area and it will be our only choice when we return to Drake.

Room Tip: Ask for a beach front room if you want a better breeze and you enjoy the sounds of waves crashes bel...

I loved this hotel! It was a really exotic location, we even saw crocs swimming on the sea from our balcony and a scarlet macaw came to eat from a tree right next to our room two morinings in a row. The food was fantastic! Kate makes the best Caipirinha in the world and I lived in brasil. There is always fresh bread yummy! The rooms are clean, there is no sound barriers so every room is conneceted in a way that was not so great. Also it needs a bit of an upgrade when it comes to sheets and towels. But other than that the service was outstanding and the trip to isla del cano incredible. Every oone who works at Jinetes de Osa was helpful and friendly. I would stay there a million times more, best experience ever!

The hotel is located on the water within walking distance to the town. The rooms are simply furnished with a fan, some with a bathroom and some sharing which is never a problem as it is always clean. The hotel is simplistic in its design allowing you to connect with the beauty of the Osa Penninsula; falling asleep and waking to the sound of ocean waves is perfect for anyone seeking to escape the fast pace of life in the city. The staff are very friendly, knowledgable and accomodating, always seeking to meet your needs as best they can and to offer advice and/or organize excursions. The food is delicious, smiles abound as do the insects so come prepared with repellent and sunscreen :) I would highly recommend this hotel for nature lovers: hiking, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling ..... just a few of the options available! The manta ray I saw while scuba diving was one of my highlights, absolutely SPECTACULAR! Be prepared to walk slowly, see much wildlife and plan your days 'ahorita' (as the Ticos would say). Muchas gracias Giovanni, Rolando, Carlos y Osito. Besos.
