“Pleasant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

We had a pleasant stay at Jinetes de Osa. The room was comfortable. The sound of the waves down below was so loud that we needed ear plugs which we used throughout our trip in Costa Rica because it gets loud at night with all the wildlife around. There is no swimming off the beach there; not that you would want to if you are doing excursions that Jinetes de Osa are very skilled at doing. They have a large catamaran that is comfortable on several hour long trips in the open waters. One nuance we did not enjoy was the sounds of a drum beating at the local school. Jinetes is located very close to town and you could hear the drum very well. The children were practicing for the national holiday of Costa Rica, which is a beautiful thing. However, since we were on vacation to enjoy peace and quiet the noise was pretty annoying as it was repetitive and you could not escape from it.

Jinetes de Osa is located on the road that on one side has a steep hill and on the other side the bay. The only walking you can do is along that road. The food was just ok like everywhere else in Costa Rica with the exception of a few places where we thought the food was delicious. On the way back we were transferred to the airstrip in an old pick up truck and the door was so heavy and hard to manipulate especially on the uneven road that I accidentally crushed my foot with it, so badly that I had to be in a wheelchair for the next 3 days. Needless to say I couldn't hike anywhere. I think Jinetes de Osa should provide better transportation to its guests to the air strip, especially when the guests are paying top dollar for it. Also, the place was so boring that we were glad to continue to our next destination.

The team was very welcoming and well informed of our stay. My boyfriend and I were able to get our diving certificate here also. The food is AMAZING! I loved the idea that everyone ate together at the same table. We met so many lovely people! For me it was like summer camp all over again. Everything was well planned, and had alot of wonderfull options as to what to do. Thank you so much for this memorable vacation!

As soon as we arrived at the hotel the owner met us and reviewed the details of our stay. He knew we were going on the night bug walk that evening, snorkeling the next morning and that we needed to catch the afternoon water taxi back to Sierpe the next afternoon. They accommodated our schedule beautifully. They scheduled an early dinner for us so we could go on the night bug walk. They scheduled an early breakfast so we could catch the boat to go snorkeling. When we got back from snorkeling they had lunch ready so we could catch the water taxi. They were organized and on top of their game.

The rooms were clean, not fancy, no air conditioning but we didn't need it. No bugs at all, no mosquitos, flies, nothing.

Take the short walk through the jungle to the beach around the corner from the bay. It was beautiful. We crossed a small hanging bridge over a natural turquoise pool along the way. We also saw capuchin monkeys on the walk.

There was a beautiful macaw in the trees outside the door of our room.

This is a special place if you want to get off the beaten path and still have a comfortable bed, clean water and a hot shower.

We stayed here for 4 nights in January. The only vacant accommodation was the "Superior Room" which is situated high above the dining area with an outstanding view of the ocean. You are above the trees affording some decent bird watching in the early morning. These rooms are more expensive than those closer to the lodge (which also looked pretty nice),but the views and privacy make it worth it. We were surprised with the fact that you need to climb about 180 uneven steps to access the rooms, so you will be in shape when you leave. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We took the Cano island snorkeling tour and the Corcovado Sirena tour and both were excellent. The food is good, and there are other in town options within walking distance. This is a great place to stay.

I spent a lovely week at Jinetes in Dec. My family loves to dive and the last two members of the family were there getting their Padi Junior Diving Certificates at Canos island a mere 17 km off the coast of Drake Bay. The water was clear and warm. You can't ask for much better conditions than we had.

We spent the afternoons back at Jinetes taking Canopy Tours, Rain Forest tours and just generally relaxing. A sunset kayak tour with all the guests turned into some excitement when we found out that the floating logs in the bay were actually Crocodiles!

All and all the food was good! The management was excellent and the rooms were clean but basic. We found that their description for " relax and enjoy the cool breezes..." was code for no Air Conditioning beyond the ceiling fan in your room.

In the mornings we awoke to Scarlet Red Macaws flying in the wild making terrifying screeches, and several types of monkeys waiting to join you for coffee on you balcony. It was all a rouse though... they were actually there to steel your sugar packets.

The trip to get Jinetes was an adventure in itself. We flew from San Jose to a small uncontrolled airstrip a few miles away from Drake Bay. They loaded the bags on the roof of the jeep and we took off driving on a dirt road. We had to ford a couple of streams along the way and then they dropped us off at the beach and pointed to a trail...you had to walk the last half mile it was so desolate.

We are already trying to figure out when we can make a return trip to Jinetes and the Osa Peninsula. It was another 5 star family vacation!

Room Tip: Take what you can get! They fill up fast.

Great location on the water of Drake Bay and walking distance to other beaches.
Staff was super friendly and helpful, including the unpretentious owner who sat with us for a long after dinner conversation.
We used them for a snorkeling/scuba diving excursion to Caño Island which was excellent and just as promised.
Room was very clean but nothing too fancy. They were adding a few additional rooms while we were there.
Dinner was great: both the food and sitting with other guests at the communal table and making new friends.
In the afternoon, there's nothing better than hanging out on the second floor balcony with a fruit-shake or cold beer.

Stayed here for 8 days and had a great time. At the start I had a room near the office, which was big, pretty basic but nice. Also had great wifi reception! Later during the stay, we moved to one of the brand new rooms up the hill from the main building. We were the first people to ever use the room. It has pros and cons... The room itself is lovely and has an amazing view, great bathroom, excellent mattresses on the beds. However, it is a really steep climb up - take a torch as the path is not lit. Also there is no wifi up there.

The food was really good, whether breakfast lunch or dinner. The bar is well stocked too.

Perfect place to stay if you want to dive. The diving is OK, but there are basically only 3 or 4 dive sites, so it's not an amazing place to go for a long dive vacation. That being said, we had a manta, lots of fish, a turtle, some little sharks and dolphins guiding us home!

Getting into town in the evenings is a trek across a hard to find bridge - again, take a flashlight. Or wading through the stream if the tide is low enough. This means lots of people stay in the hotel for dinners.

Can totally recommend Jinetes, great place to relax, very deserted and quiet area of CR, with tons of exciting trips to do in the area. Totally different vibe to northern beaches.
