“Get close to nature, comfortably and happily”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

Staying at the Aguila de Osa is a unique experience that allows you to get close to nature, comfortably and happily. Our family of four loved our stay here and highly recommend Aguila de Osa to anybody who is going to the Osa peninsula. The Osa peninsula is a tropical rain forest, and is alive with animals, bugs, reptiles, amphibians, and there is no escaping them.

There were five great aspects to the hotel - Lodging, Location, Dining, Staff / Service, and Tour Guides.

Lodging: The rooms are located on top of a small hill and have 2 rooms to a bungalow. We stayed in Room 1, which had 2 queen beds. None of the rooms have AC and we were still comfortable without it. Our room had a great view and was surrounded by lush flora. The beds were very comfortable. There was a patio with rocking chairs and a hammock which was enjoyed by our kids during the tropical afternoon thunderstorms. Bathrooms were clean and functional, though the hot water ran out quickly. Like in other tropical areas, keep the room door closed to prevent bugs from getting in - there is no screen door, though there are screens on all the windows. It's a fabulous, open-air experience. Also, do a bed check every night to ensure that no outside bugs have come in.

Location: The hotel is located on the edge of a river that drains into Drake Bay. You get to the hotel by a short boat ride from the town of Drake Bay. You can even walk to Drake Bay - it is about 10 minutes from the hotel. The views from the hotel are excellent. There is a dining room, bar and kitchen at the lower level, which is surrounded by a garden. From there, it is a short walk up the hill to the rooms.

Dining: Chef Dixon and his staff are outstanding. We are vegetarian, and they did a great job of making sure that we had nutritious, healthy, tasty breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Even the appetizers which are served at 6pm had great vegetarian choices. If you have a particular requirement, you can speak to Dixon and he will take care of it for you. During our stay, we had other families who had gluten free diets and he took great care of them, including making a GF birthday cake for one of them. The dining is communal, so you get to interact with other families and learn about what they did during the day.

Staff / Service: The team at Aguila de Osa is excellent. The waiters and bartenders are smart, friendly, helpful, and interact with you extensively. They knew our vegetarian needs and ensured that we were taken care of. They also keep the place clean, clear out the tables promptly, and are always making sure that you are taken care of. Aguila De Osa also offers a laundry service - we took advantage of it on many days to take care of wet, sweaty clothes - we highly recommend it - it is well worth the money. The boat drivers were also great - they negotiated the ocean with dexterity.

Tour Guides: Carlos was our tour guide for the mangrove tour and bird watching tour, while Tony was our tour guide for the San Pedrillo station tour. Both are excellent at what they do and have been doing it for many years at Aguila De Osa - we learned a lot from them. They are also great people who share their personal experiences and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with them.

Aguila de Osa is a unique, once in a lifetime experience and we highly recommend it.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to have great views.

Aguila de Osa exceeded all expectations. My husband and I loved the views, rooms (so clean and gorgeous!), the monkeys visiting throughout the day, the food (happy hour and breakfast are the best!). And most of all we loved the friendly and local staff service and camaraderie of the guests. Eating together with other guests was a way to learn about the different excursions you could take the next day, and hear all about their adventures and tell your own. We made a lot of friends along the way.

I highly recommend taking the free kayaks up the river next to the hotel (magical), and taking a quick walk-hike to the secluded beach nearby for some sun and pristine scenery. Also recommend getting a junior suite for couples, which provides a bit more seclusion. Otherwise you are sharing walls with other guests, and you can hear everything because of the lack of windows.

Everything about Osa, Drake, and in particular Aguila was incredible. Highly recommend it - we can't wait to return!

Room Tip: Junior suites are important to select for more privacy

This was our second trip, in July, a different season and different things to see, the baby and two adult Hump Back Whales, along with many Dolphins, close up, were amazing. Our first trip in December was truly excellent and a lovely place to spend Christmas with Red Macaws, Monkey's, Green Parrots, Toucan and Kingfishers all on the door step.

The location, accommodation, staff, meals and trips are all first class. Bird Watching with Carlos, Diving with Sandra and Hiking with Tony, so much nature and beauty to see.

Nothing is to much trouble, the general manager even mended my sunglasses. Thank you to all you are all wonderful.

Mary Howe

Room Tip: All excellent.

We loved the Aguila de Osa Inn hotel because everything was so great about it - the rooms, the amazing view, the service, the professional and kind tour guide (thank you Tony! :)), the food, the bar and appetizer before dinner with all the guests together (great idea!), everything you would expect from an hotel in a magical place like Corcovado! thank you! :)

We were there in late May and loved it. The location is beautiful, the property is well maintained, the rooms are comfortable, the staff is very friendly and welcoming and the food was excellent.

The one thing you need to keep in mind is that the whole Osa peninsula area is very rustic and they keep it that way on purpose. This guarantees that the wildlife have a great environment and you will see all sorts of creatures all over the place. The flip side is that it's rustic so much of what one takes for granted in the US is very different there. For example, the inn has no A/C. The rooms have those large tropical ceiling fans, but it can get very humid - you're in a rain forest, after all. And we did have visitors - a frog and a crab at different points - in the room. Oh - and because their septic systems in the area aren't robust, you put used toilet paper in the trash basket by the toilet. It gets emptied daily, but takes a little getting used to.

But if you go in with an open mind, understanding that this isn't the Hyatt in Maui, you'll have a wonderful experience.

Re: wildlife, there were land crabs scuttling all over the place, two 6-8 foot crocodiles swam up the river right in front of the lobby on our first afternoon, there was a boa living on the roof of the lobby that slithered down onto a neighboring palm, iguanas all over the place, monkeys, frogs, etc.

I would definitely go back. Already thinking about it, actually.

Room Tip: I think pretty much all the rooms are similar. They are more or less cabins divided down the middle...

This was our 2nd stop on our Costa Rica trip, as we wanted to do some scuba diving off of Isle de Cano. After arriving in Drake Bay (an adventure in itself as there are river crossings and the road is challenging), we were met by a boat that took us across the bay to the resort. You can hike (or kayak) from the town to the resort, but not with luggage! First, the staff was extremely friendly, and they were very knowledgeable about local wildlife. The food was good (you had two choices for lunch and dinner). The rooms were great; we stayed in a junior suite that had a beautiful patio with views of the bay. The diving was better than we expected--there were many schools of fish and lots of sharks, eels, turtles, really, we were pleasantly surprised. The dive boat was roomy and comfortable. We got some great pictures of dolphins swimming in its wake! The owner, Brad, is so down to earth and nice! After just a short time with him, he felt like an old friend! I would highly recommend this resort!

Room Tip: The larger the room number, the farther you have to walk to the main lodge.

We had traveled to Costa Rica in May 2014 for our honeymoon and this was by far our favorite hotel. The staff are very friendly and the views could not be better. We had travelled during the off season so there was only one other couple there with us but that didn't stop the staff from great service and ridiculously amazing food. Nothing even compares to the states. A very isolate location and had to arrive by boat which just adds to the seclusion. NO COPLAINTS!!
