“Remote Paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

We spent five nights in this little piece of heaven in Drake Bay. We arrived by water taxi from Golfito. We were greeted with a welcome cocktail! Our room was amazing with all the wood, and we really appreciated the fan. It is a steep walk to the rooms, but totally doable on a nice cement pathway. We were in room 3 which was in the second building, so our walk was shorter than others. We really liked the leather rockers on the porch that overlooked the amazing view of the Bay. While here we did the snorkeling and the jungle hike to Corcovado Park. We had knowledgeable, amazing guides for both. If I had it to over, I would probably do the hike to the Sirena Ranger station because it is more remote and you see more animals. However, we did enjoy our hike and the swim in the waterfall was a nice bonus. Our guide Tony even gave us a "guided" tour from the hotel to the town of Drake one evening when he was walking home. What a treat! We walked to town twice to experience a little of the ice cream and the La Jungla bar. We took the kayaks for a spin one day and also walked to the little secluded beach. Paradise! The food was top notch with a choice of Catch of the Day and another entree every day. I recommend the fish! The staff were all so helpful and nice. We really enjoyed our Bird Hike with Carlos. He is passionate about the birds of Costa Rica and we saw over 35 varieties on our hike. The place is small, so you get a chance to mingle and meet other visitors from all over the world. The Appetizer Hour before dinner was my favorite time of the day. You could order a drink and find out what the other guests had done for the day. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was being assigned to a table for dinner. I like to be able to sit where and with who I want. Just a small thing for sure. We had a great time and would love to come back and bring our grown children!

Room Tip: If you don't want to walk, room 3 is great. I think the higher number rooms have even better vi...

This was the most amazing part of our 2 week vacation in Costa Rica! The hotel is difficult to get to, you take a prop plane that seats 11-19, then take a taxi ride, then a short boat ride, but it is very worth the trip. The hotel is beautifully situated on the coast with fantastic views in every room, although rooms 6-8 & 14 seemed to have the best views. The service was great, the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help, and the food was incredible. The Corcovado national park hike, Mangrove tour, and snorkeling at Cano island were amazing! All of the tour guides were so nice, friendly, and really made the excursions fantastic. Tony, Gabriella, and Dennis were amazing and could find wildlife that would have definitely been missed. The rooms here are not luxurious, but are clean and spacious and well kept for an ecolodge. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone!

We just returned from Drake Bay and the Aguila de OSA Inn. I believe this was our 9th consecutive year at Aguila. We come primarily for the fishing and to enjoy the way Costa Rica is supposed to be experienced, not in a big chain hotel. Bradd and his staff literally know very guest by name and the food is amazing. Chef Dixon and his team literally serve gourmet meals in the rainforest. Every night we enjoyed fish brought in straight off the boats, prepared any way you would like. As a new addition this year there was some excellent Chilean wines available. We cannot wait to return again next year.

When you step off the small boat that takes you from your taxi that takes you from the small plane into Drake Bay from San Jose, someone greets you and says, "Welcome to paradise" and if you are like us, New York skeptics, you say to yourself, "We'll be the judge of that."

So here it is - it is paradise.

The siting of this inn could not be more beautiful. Each room has a vista, each vista embraces sky and water and trees and animals. You cannot ask for a more pristine place - with comfortable beds, delicious food (thank you Dixon!) and decks with chairs and hammocks upon which you can relax in amazing ways.

Be prepared for kayaking on a smooth river while howler and capuchin monkeys let themselves be known. Take a hike into the Corcovado jungle with a most knowledgeable guide and see a Fer de Lance coiled up, coatamundis, sloths, birds galore and amazing trees that you can now identify (kind of!). Stop for a waterfall adventure (water so refreshing that even those of us who normally do not 'do ' this type of thing had a great dip. Go snorkeling and be amazed at the variety and colors of the fish, schools of fish, even a shark, and feel so well cared for that there is no fear. Go into the mangroves and see birds you have only seen in nature documentaries.

And most of all, be grateful for a most welcoming, genuine and caring staff. To a person the staff has been chosen because they are professional and thoughtful and responsive and caring. There is an authenticity to the way in which the various staff members take care of each guest. Nothing servile, simply wonderful hospitality - I want to give a specific shout out to Carlos for his knowledge, to Dennis for his boating skills, to Gabrielle and Olman for their administrative abilities, to Luis and Claudio for their attentiveness to our food (Dixon for his cooking!) and to Gabriella for helping me personally overcome 60+ years of fear of putting my face under water and not being able to stand - I snorkled with her help and overcame my panic with her heart and her help -- amazing! Tony for his guiding abilities. I could go on. Brad has chosen each of these people and treats them so that they treat you in turn with care and smiles.

I have rarely chosen to be in a place where I would be eating with folks at a table three times a day, where there is nothing to distract you from activities and nature, where there is no TV (tho we did stream the super bowl!) and I had some concerns. The people who choose to be here at the edge of the world, where 80% of the biodiversity of the country can be found, where every day you choose to be up and out on an adventure at 6:30 or 7 AM and then to bed by 9 -- well these are people who are interesting and interested, social in a good way and fun to meet and talk with.

If you can figure out how to visit Aguila de Osa, you too will find yourself in a little bit of Paradise!

Room Tip: The rooms are up many steps. If you get room 1 or 2 you have the least number of steps with grand vi...

We had a wonderful week in a beautiful, well maintained resort. Everything was first class--the facilities, the tours, the food--BUT especially the staff. You may find equivalent places to stay, but I doubt you will find any better!! AW

We're traveling throughout Costa Rica for five weeks and spent our first five days at Aguila de Osa, a gorgeous property under the outstanding helmsmanship of Bradd Johnson, or as we like to call him," the Commodore". We stayed in the beautiful honeymoon cabin, which is more like the most luxurious treehouse you can imagine, looking out over the property's wild rain forest landscape. The woodwork of the gleaming polished floors and beams is astonishing. This truly feels like the middle of nowhere, and for us that's always a good thing! Every detail has been considered in making this hotel blend into the surrounding environment, and Bradd and his staff's commitment to sustainability is very impressive --- indeed, he pretty much wrote the book on environmentally conscientious hospitality in this part of the world.

We can't say enough about the calibre of service of the entire staff, who nonetheless keep it real with a warm and easy-going vibe. No stuffy or pretentious "boutique-ness" here! Two especially noteworthy residents are Chef Dixon, who went the extra mile to whip up delicious gluten-free dishes for me (Thank you, chef!! Still dreaming of those banana pancakes ...) and the undisputed divine hostess of Aguila de Osa, Coco, whose warmth and constant attentiveness added immeasurably to our delight during our stay.

Needless to say, there was an abundance of wildlife on site every day --- scarlet macaws, monkeys, toucans, giant grasshopper, lizards, frogs, a cayman, two and three-toed sloths, giant morpho butterflies --- and in the water, white tip sharks, giant schools of brilliantly colored fish, moray eels, puffer fish, dolphins, turtles, and many, many others. All dive trips and hikes were perfectly organized and conducted by very enthusiastic and well-trained naturalists (special thanks to our two wonderful dive mistresses, Gabriela and Sandra!).

We were happy to meet The Commodore, so muchas gracias, Bradd, Coco, and the oustanding staff at Aguila de Osa for an unforgettable stay --- we'll be back! Pura vida!

Room Tip: Cabin 11, the honeymoon suite, is heavenly and very private.

What paradise! My new husband and I were the first guests when Aguila re-opened after the green season. We were greeted by a friendly and attentive team, Coco (the owner's dog), and the most delicious passionfruit daquiris. The room was awesome with a beautiful view of the bay, iguanas, macaws, monkeys, and two rainbows! I loved birdwatching from the shower!

Things NOT to miss in Drake Bay....The Night Tour with Tracie and Gian, Sirena station (or really anywhere in Corcovado), horseback riding on the beach, snorkeling at Cano Island.

A few shout outs....Hats off to the chef who managed to make us mmm and ahhh at every meal. A special thanks to Claudio for "party rockin" with us! And of course to Bradd, who we loved getting to know and can't wait to see again. Thanks for running an amazing hotel and ending our honeymoon on the highest note possible!
