Delfin Amor is the real deal. In a world where every other hotel slaps on the 'eco' label to attract tourists, Delfin is one of the few actually committed to the concept. It felt so good to be in a place where I could see wildlife (both in the forest and on the water) and know that I was doing it in a responsible way. They use solar power, compost, recycle, serve organic whole foods and they are the ONLY place in Osa committed to dolphin and whale conservation. And, on top of being earth-friendly, it's just a beautiful resort to visit. The cabinas are adorable, clean and each one has a long porch where you can sit and watch the forest in action. The Harmony House, where all meals are served, is open-air with 360 degree views of the forest. One of my favorite things to do during my stay was to relax in one of their hammocks and enjoy the surrounding forest.
The highlight of the whole experience though, was of course, the dolphins and whales. As I mentioned earlier, when you stay at Delfin, you are supporting the only dolphin and whale conservation project in Costa Rica. The waters there are amongst the most biologically diverse in the world and before Sierra's arrival, there was no one looking out for the dolphins, whales, sea turtles and other marine life that were being snared by fishing lines and caught in nets. While we were there we saw Pan-tropical Spotted Dolphins, sea turtles and Humpback Whales but the best surprise was at the end. We were packing up to leave when someone spotted Pseudo Orcas off the shore. The staff were SO excited (a testament to their passion for the work that they do) and several of them ran to jump in a boat to go find them. As they were racing around they said 'do you want come or do you have to be back in Sierpe for a flight!?'. "YES, we wanted to come!" we exclaimed. We raced out into the water, found the pod and proceeded to coast along with something like 100 Pseudo's for the next hour. They stayed right next to the boat, swimming along with the current. The staff (and us) were yelling and hi-fiving. It was AMAZING - not just because we got to see the Pseudo Orcas (who look like Orcas but a bit smaller) but also because the staff and researchers were as thrilled as we were...and they work there!
It makes me really angry, reading the previous poster's review. He COMPLETELY missed the point and frankly, the whole experience. Sierra and her staff are offering something unique - a vacation that is both fun AND helps the environment. It's so ironic that he believes the owner is being "cheap" and penny pinching when everything she makes goes into conserving the area. She's trying to get the whole place designated as a Marine Reserve for goodness sake! Every other place you stay in Osa (or almost anywhere else in the world, for that matter) is for profit only. And, everything they do at Delfin is for a reason. Not enough meat? It's an eco-resort and livestock are one of the most destructive forces on the planet because huge swathes of land need to be cleared for their grazing. Is it so bad to eat healthy, delicious, meat-free meals for a few days?! And, they serve plenty of fish! There aren't enough lights on the pathway? They are SOLAR, meaning they don't waste precious electricity so when they run out of juice, they run out. That's what the flashlights are for! You saw a scorpion? It's a FOREST, there are critters!! That reviewer is just missing the point and the experience completely. This place is about staying in a beautiful place, in great accommodation AND being earth-friendly. If you want just a regular old hotel, go stay at the Hyatt or something!
So, bottom line is, I was jaded about the whole eco-travel phenomenon and Delfin Amor restored my faith. With all we do to harm the earth everyday, it feels really good to be doing right by the environment for once. And, on top of all that, you get to stay in beautiful accommodation and eat delicious food inside a rainforest. It really is a truly unique and amazing experience!
