“Loved the Divine Dolphin Lodge”

Delfin Amor Eco Lodge

I just returned from a week stay at the
Divine Dolphin lodge in Drake Bay, Costa Rica. I took a small group there to enjoy nature and the Dolphins, Whales and Turtles.
The week was so filled with wonder, beauty and fun that we couldn't believe it.
The Costa Rican staff made me feel like a queen. The service was superb!
The small attention to detail made this nature lodge in the middle of the rain forest seem like a four star hotel. For example, the towels are butter soft.. The quilts are all decorated with ocean themes...The candlelight dinners have lovely linens and excellant food.. the candles in the sand for the beach bonfires are another special touch... All this and more.It was an exotic and spiritual experience under the starry sky. The natural untouched beauty of the bay and the flowers and birds and butterflies. Wow. We were all so blown away.
Of course the reason we went was for the encounters with Dolphins and Whales. We were not disappointed!
The place is amazing and I can not wait to go back. Of course Sierra the owner is trying to save the bay, so all the trips there help to get documentation and aid her efforts. If you love nature and natural settings, but want to sleep comfortably and eat like a queen, then this is the place for you.

The lodge location is beautiful with good snorkeling in front and a variety of local wildlife. The tour guides were the best anywhere. The accomodations were adequate with the cabinas and bathrooms being mostly screened. However, large gaps at the top allowed in all sorts of critters including tarantulas, scorpions, roaches, and grasshoppers. My disappointments were three-fold. First, the food (upon arrival you are told the lodge is vegetarian)! Fish was served on 3 of my 7 nights there, but if you are not a veggie fan you will not be happy here. Second, the dogs ... I am a veterinarian and animal lover, but was less than thrilled to have the beautiful jungle nights interrupted by barking dogs. Finally, several times the ambience was completely disrupted by modern music coming from the staff quarters. ONE FINAL NOTE...Costa Rica has recently enacted a law prohibiting tourists from swimming with the dolphins, so do not expect to so (legally anyway)!!! The manager/owner claims to be there to protect the marine life, but our stay included the period immediately after the law went into effect, and the manager still allowed tourists in to swim with the dolphins under the guise of an ocean "pit stop" where apparently everyone needed to go at once (with their snorkel gear and cameras in tow)!

this was my first time to costa rica and delfin amor.our small group booked 3 trips on the boat to see and hopefully swimm with the dolphins. on our first voyage we encountered a plentiful pod of spotted dolfins and were able to swimm with them-it was exciting and thrilling. on the second trip, we saw a small pod that was resting and we let them be and didn't see any more for the rest of that day which was a bit disappointing. On our third adventure out, Sierra, the lodge's most welcoming owner and dolphin-lover, found 2 incredible pods of spinner dolphins that came together and gave us a spectacular show full of joy and exuberance as they leaped and spun their bodies round and round. when we respectfully entered the water, their home, they were all around us giving us side glances and allowing us to swimm with them. There were literally hundreds and hundreds of spinner dolphins all around us!. As for dolphin amor I can't say enough. The staff were knowledgeable and welcoming and treated us as family without being overwhelming. The rooms were very comfortable and the FOOD; well, all I have to say about that is that I gained 8 pounds! I want to thank Sierra for her wonderful hospitality and great personhood. All the best, Bee Zollo (with Judy's group)

“Just Okay...”

Just came back from 2 weeks in C.R. This was our 4 th time there and always travel around the country.
Altogether, we have stayed at 20+ different places over the years and this is definitely not worth the money.
All the other guests and we did not know that The menu is 100% vegetarian except for fish once in five days. That was fine with us and everyone there but it might not be for you.
The place is run down and in need of some serious TLC. From the switch to the light in our bathroom ( a distance of 8 ft) I counted no less than 8 splices, no junction box. No screens at the eaves. The deck in the common area has no guardrail and the planked deck is rotting. The gate to the kitchen/fridge is disgustingly filthy.
Sierra was there the whole time we were and she never thanked us for the business or asked if everything was fine. It was not what we expected form the owner. After all, we did spend almost $2500.00 US dollars there.
The manager was caught lying to other guests about the availability of their tour. He also lied to us when it was our turn to go to Cano island. He said no boat was available to take us because they were booked for dolphin tours. Tours that two days before were not booked. It was either 4 of us Cano people at $100.00 US each or 8 of the others at $100.00 US. That's why they bumped us. it was after we threatened to leave a day early that a boat became available "after a lot of hard work". We didn't appreciate the attempt to make us feel guilty. We had booked this trip in July. Even our guide knew three days before that he was booked to go with us. It turns out he was on the dolfin tour, and we were dropped off by another boat from another hotel with our lunch and no tour guide (we enjoyed the day immensely nonetheless). They did expect us to pay the full price, $400.00 US, for the 40 min ride anyway. It was after I asked for a discount, (which I hate doing) at checkout that they charged me $45.00 US per person instead. Still too much. We left feeling shafted.
I opened my own successful business from scratch 10 years ago and I did not expect the same level of service I give my customers, only what we've come to expect from other places we stayed at in Costa Rica over the years.
If you're going there, make sure you like big, stinky dogs. One of them is bound to adopt you and park himself at your door, which we didn't mind but the barking at all hours of the night, my God. If I wanted to spend my vacation with dogs I would've brought our own dog, at least she doesn't bark! They have a scarlet macaw on site and they feed it table scraps like macaroni salad and that bugged me. My kids thought it was funny.
I recommend Drake Bay but not Delfin Amor, I just don't think you get value for money. If I was a millionaire, I guess I wouldn't care so much but we worked hard and saved for 3 years for this vacation and we were dissapointed.
On a good note, Roy was great, so was Kenneth, The chef is definitely a chef, the rooms was cleaned nicely, Victor lied but I think it wasn't his call, he was forced, he is obviously a very nice man.
If you've never been to Costa Rica, never seen a jungle, and never seen wild dolphins you will love this place. If you've been around the block a few times and like to get what you pay for, you'll be dissapointed.
That's our review.

Just got home from 2 fantastic weeks in Costa Rica, with my husband and 2 kids( 9 and 16). We had a fabulous time. For the first 6 days we stayed at the Delphin Amor Eco Lodge in Drake Bay. It was wonderful. From the moment we arrived in our Sansa plane on to the grass run way in the middle of what seeemed like a jungle I knew I had made the right choice of destinations. We were met by a jeep that took us to Drake Bay and then on to a boat that took us to the lodge. It was so picturesque. Our cabin was comfortable and clean, the staff were so friendly and couldnt do enough for us, the trips were great and everything seemed to run smoothly and with precision, but at the same time was so laid back. All the guests ate together at meal times, which was a wonderful opertunity to get to know each other, and we met some great people. Our guides Roy and Sierra were great on the dolphin tour and we saw so may dolhins it was amazing. At the lodge and areas surrounding it we saw to many wild birds and animals to mention. I would recomend Delphin Amor to anyone who is not out for 5 star luxury, but people who are genuinely interested in wild life, meeting new people and experiencing a totally different type of holiday. We can not sing its praises highly enough.
