“Ecolodge with a little bit of everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

This accomodation, run by Jack & Diane (oh yes, from the heartland), is a rustic retreat of cabins on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, just north of Dominical. Each cabin has a kitchenette, living room, clean linens, screened-in porch and umbrellas for the wet season - very useful. Hacienda Baru offers guided walks on their trails at dawn, dusk or late night which is wonderful because the wildlife changes depending on the time of day you explore. There is a Tucan Tour - zip line a little over a miles hike from the cabins, guided by Hacienda Baru staff. The beach is secluded and runs HUGELY AWESOME waves, but also great for a morning run where you will not see anyone else out. The pool is lovely. Common area under cover with hammocks. The restaurant on-site serves delicious fresh fish and many good veggie options. The fruit at breakfast is ridiculously fresh. Jack & Diane will help to set up tours and adventures off site - they helped us organize a mangrove tour at night, white water rafting on the rio savegre, and could arrange for surfing in Dominical just 1-2 miles down the road.

No frills, great for families or large groups.

YES - internet
YES - alcohol
NO - AC
NO room service, but if you will be out later than dinner is served at the restaurant, they will make you a plate to put in your fridge for later

The restaurant was great and offered a lot of vegetarian options. We went on two of the tours and enjoyed both. I would definitely recommend the zip-line and canopy climbing tour. The lowland birding tour was OK. We are avid birders and did not feel that our guide for that tour was as knowledgeable although he was very kind and good generalist guide. Pedro, one of the other guides, is excellent and it would be worth requesting him for any bird tours.

We stayed here as part of a wedding party and had about 5 full cabins. The pool was great, the trails were nice and the breakfast was also great. It's a ways to walk into Dominical, but a short taxi ride away. the staff was friendly and the whole place was very relaxing. We also did a canopy tour/zip lining with them which was great!

My boyfriend and I loved our stay here. We had the economy cabin, which had more than enough room for us - 2 bedrooms and one master bedroom, a kitchenette, fridge, and living room area - felt like a little temporary home. We didn't need all the room, but that was the least expensive room available and we wanted to stay at this hotel to take advantage of the trails. We hiked both trails on the premises and had such a great time! We loved being able to rest in our room between both of the trails. The pool is also lovely, surrounded by the colorful and well-kept gardens. To top it off, our continental breakfast the next morning filled us up for the rest of the day. All in all a great hotel that I would stay at again and recommend to friends!

Hacienda Baru is a great place to zipline and learn about wildlife, but if you are looking for comfort, I would advise against staying in the economy cabins. The bathrooms were, quite honestly, not clean, the rooms barely adequate. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, and Jack and the staff of Hacienda Baru are doing wonderful work. We just wish we'd had more comfort. On a last note, the night in the jungle was truly amazing, an absolute must for the nature lover.

Room Tip: Get a superior cabin or a room by the pool.

We really love Hacienda Baru! The cabins are simple and adequate. The restaurant is reasonably priced and we still talk about the fresh fruit juices and how good they tasted after hiking.

We did the "night in the jungle" stay. Wow. What a fantastic memory. Be warned, it's a LONG hot hike but so worth it. My only complaint is that you leave later in the afternoon, hike for a couple of hours and get there when it's getting dark. We ate a terrific tipico dinner by candle light and then half of us went on a night hike and the other half went to sleep. Waking up with a stunning view of the jungle was AMAZING! We had breakfast and trekked back down. I think these trips should be at least two nights in length to explore and to really feel what it is like to be in the middle of nowhere.

The beach is beyond anything we have ever experienced. Gorgeous, warm water and not another soul as far as the eyes could see in either direction.

We'd go back to Hacienda Baru in a heart beat!

Six of us ranging from 65 to 5 in 2 cabins. The pool and gardens are beautiful and wonderful to see all the monkeys scrambling about the trees. We did the ziplining and the morning wildlife walk. The guides and staff are kind and amazingly informative. They engaged the young kids about leaf cutter ants and all sorts of wildlife that has stuck with them. We had a rental car and went into the nearby town which was great for watching the surfing and dinners. The food at Baru is best for breakfast but the rest aren't great. We picked up some snacks and beer to keep in the cabin but the kitchen is not too useful and the fridge isn't terribly cold. This is not a slick all inclusive by any means, but it was a lovely way to really visit Costa Rica. I felt like a guest of a family. The beach is absolutely stunning, but the undertow makes it very dangerous to swim. However, we played at the edge and had an endless beach to ourselves which was magical. Time is on a different clock in these parts, so be flexible about time so order a beer and bring snacks for the kids because everything runs very late.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The lodge is located at the entrance to Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge which protects 330 hectares (815 acres) of tropical forest, wetlands, mangrove and 3 kilometers of pristine Baru Beach. The refuge offers seven kilometers of well marked nature trails and a bird watching tower for a modest entrance fee. Guided tours with sharp-eyed local guides include two different types of canopy tours, five hiking tours, a camping tour and three bird watching tours. Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge & Lodge is situated on Costa Rica's Southern Pacific Coast. This is a region of distinct natural beauty where forest covered mountains rise up from the dramatic Pacific coastline. The village of Dominical is just 3 km from Hacienda Baru located. Hacienda Baru Ecolodge's bungalow style cabins are large and roomy. Each one has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with one double and one twin bed. Each bungalow has a bathroom with hot water shower, living room, porch, and kitchenette. For your convenience, they come equipped with fridge, coffee maker, hot plate and fans in all the rooms. They are ideal for families. In addition to the cabins, Hacienda Baru Ecolodge is now offering six new Pool View Guest Rooms. Each of these superior units has a large bathroom, a porch and ample space for beds and other furniture. Each will normally have a king size bed and a twin bed , but they can be equipped with up to four twin beds. Each has a frige and coffee maker as well. The attractive tile roofing is made from recycled plastic bags. A well ventilated design, insulation between the roofing and the polished teak ceiling, and overhead fans all insure cool comfort for our guests. All of the teak and gmelina wood used in the construction came from Hacienda Baru's own plantations. The wood for the pine beams and cypress furniture all came from plantations as well. Not a single piece of the wood used came from a natural forest. Solar heaters provide plenty of hot water for the bathrooms. The outside walls are slate and polished teak. The new guest rooms are conveniently located right in front of our new swimming pool. Our breezy open air restaurant allows you to observe the gardens and natural surroundings as you dine. We have five private ranchos for guests that want an intimate setting perhaps for a romantic candlelight dinner or a special family meal. Our menu is primarily very tasty typical Costa Rican food, but we do offer a variety of dishes for those who either don't like or want a break from rice and beans. We offer a selection Costa Rican fruit drinks known as FRESCOS meaning refreshing, soft drinks, a selection of Costa Rican beer, you must have heard of Imperial, wines and other licors. The swimming pool at Hacienda Baru Lodge is disinfected with ozone produced by an ozone generator which injects a constant flow of this eco-friendly gas into the water. This system of disinfection allows us to maintain a very low concentration of chlorine in the pool. The chlorine level is so slight that it is imperceptible to pool users. The swimming pool is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Guests from both the cabins and guest rooms are welcome to use the pool during these hours. Bird Watching, Canopy Exploration and Ecological Tours are our specialty. Our bilingual grass roots naturalist guides will help you discover the wonders of the tropical rainforest, such as leaf cutter ants, the sleepy sloths and the nesting site of the Common Pootoo. On our tours you can experience everything from the Rainforest Canopy to Mangrove Swamps or the Jungle at Night. ... more   less
