I opted for a 2 hour private lesson for 65$ and it was really worth it. Adam, my instructor for the day, holds australian surf instructor certification and has taught in Australia, and the States, and Costa Rica. I am very new to surfing, but with Adam's help I met with a great deal of success. He began with some brief dryland instruction to ensure that I could be positioned properly on the board and that I could 'pop up' with my feet landing in the right place. After that, Adam spent the whole time swimming beside me... helping me to get out past the near-shore waves, helping me get lined-up, and helping me with the proper timing for hand paddling and popping up. I think I got over 75% of my ride attempts, thanks to him.
The lesson was arranged through the hotel... the only two drawbacks were that they showed up late (phone message mishap) and Adam kept forgetting my name! (he was honest enough to ask though)
I highly recommend this surf school that also offers group classes for 45$. I think that the 65$ for personalized instruction is a better deal. Two thumbs up!
