While a visit to Tombstone makes for an enjoyable day, the two attractions that provide the reality of it all are the Courthouse and the Boot Hill Cemetery. To enter the cemetery, you must go through the gift shop, where it all seems fun and Old West, but upon reading the sign that reminds visitors that this is an actual graveyard and to be respectful, it becomes all too real. It is sobering to read the tombstones and epitaphs, children dying, women committing suicide to avoid prostitution, and of course many that died a violent death. Take the time to look at all the graves, and spend the $3 for the grave descriptions. Go early! We arrived at about 10 am on a Sunday, and every part of Tombstone was packed by noon.
