“Lovely place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We stayed at La Palapa for 4 nights and loved our stay and our wonderful hosts. The location was perfect for us, very removed from the resort and tourist areas but only a short drive to amazing beaches, towns, and resturants. We had a car which I think is key to enjoying the area to the fullest. La Palapa is beautiful and the private bungalows were more than we hoped for. We had a large private patio where we enjoyed cocktails with local fruit daily. Breakfast is included and dinners are available nightly. The dinners were amazing and we ended up eating their most evenings as the food was delicious! The grounds are filled with flowers, birds, wildlife and a few noisy roosters (helped us get up early every morning and enjoy the day..). Cristina was amazing booked all our tours and provided us with much information before and during our staff. I really can't say enough about how lovely our stay was here. This is truly getaway experience. We will be back!

Room Tip: The bunglows are amazing, some have more private patios ask to have a patio that faces the gardens.

The pool is the perfect temperature. The bungalow is the perfect size and comfort. The gardens are the perfect lush. The breakfast is the perfect "typical". The hosts are the perfect hosts. The weather and surrounding areas are amazingly perfect. The location to beaches and swimming holes is perfect. Our stay in La Palapa was relaxing to the max, and a great vantage point to the attractions in the Manuel Antonio area.

Room Tip: All bungalows are well situated. We were directly in front of the swimming pool and still private.

If you're looking to get AWAY from the crowds but still within 20 minutes of all the excitement, this is your place! First: you should really have a car to stay here. Of course you can take public transit and taxis, but the whole point of staying a little "off the path" is that you have completely private beaches and access to locations where you will not find tourists. Our stay was lovely. The rooms are very spacious, tons of birds around the garden/property, very nice hosts, and good food. WiFi was available in the bar/dining area, but not in the rooms (which was nice). Everything was clean. We had a great time.

La Palapa is right in the middle of nature. It is a place where you will disconnect with the outisde world since the moment you arrive. The cabins are comfortable and spacious, with a full kitchen and a lovely balcony.
Christina shared with us her knowledge about the area and thanks to her we visited the most amazing beaches in Costa Rica.
One important point: if you do not have a car, this is not the place to go, as it is right in the middle of nature.

This is not a high profile resort (with attending media/reviews/advertising) and it is relatively new so the feedback was somewhat limited on what to expect. We had been to Costa Rica before on an extensive "scouting" trip and this trip just wanted to find a couple of places to kick back and RELAX. the fact that this wasn't "high profile" was our first clue we were interested. We wanted to understand the people and the place on a more intimate basis. Portalon is just outside of Quepos and there is bus transportation (under a buck a person) to the "end of the road" where this resort nestles back into the rainforest OR you can take a cab ($30ish). Just go to the bus station and ask for Portolon, then when you are off the bus, follow the signs to the resort on the dirt road. It's a walk (under a mile I think) but worth it. I think all the photos pretty much tell the story of the gardens and the lodging (heaven on earth) but what they can't show you are the love and devotion to the property that Cristina and Manuel openly display. Manuel is devoted to the unbelievable rainforest "landscaping" and Cristina seems to take care of most of the reservations and the minute-to-minute guest care but Manuel is always there to help with anything and everything. Both are VERY EXCELLENT chefs and as a result, the included breakfast was wonderful buffet and the delicious evening meal made life simple after a wild day of sightseeing when going back into town just didn't fit the bill. I felt like each and every guest was their immediate and only concern. There's a nice walk down to the river with two waterfalls and it is so easy to take the bus to Quepos, then from there a bus leaves every 30 min or so for Manuel Antonio Park where you are practically guaranteed to see monkeys. We had a guide and saw toucans, bats, monkeys and had firsthand insight into the many medicinal plants, etc. Dive in to this resort, take the public transportation, deal with a few raindrops and you get a real feel for what living in Costa Rica would be like. The bungalow we stayed in was immaculate and fresh flowers almost every day. Birdsong almost constantly fills the air and we saw a family of monkeys sailing through the trees. Manuel, Cristina and son, Tomas are quick to point out any wildlife that you may never detect yourself. Also, an important part to add is that many people are thinking the rainy season (starts in April) isn't the best time to visit. (Usually, it rains in the late afternoon. Pours is a better word.) But you have almost the entire day for adventure and when the rain starts, well, that's a great time for a nap (siesta)... and then you are up to enjoy an briliant evening sky, a refreshing dip in a gorgeous pool, a wonderful meal and drinks and another night in paradise. So book now for the rainy season: Take a rainjacket and don't sweat the small stuff. They don't call it rainforest for nothing. It's the short, intense rains that make everything magical.

We are a family of five, and we spent three glorious days at La Palapa. The grounds were extraordinarily well kept. If you woke up early enough, you could hear and (if your lucky) see the keel billed toucans perch in the tall trees above the pool every morning (we heard them but sadly, never saw them). There was also a trail through the forest that lead up to a good lookout point where there are two unused houses and a great view of the palm fields and the ocean. The room we had was HUGE and luxurious, and surprisingly really affordable. The food was great - a different home-cooked meal every time. The dessert (I forgo the name), which had an amazing combination of caramel, whipped cream, coffee-dipped cookies, and who knows what other goodness, was possibly the best we had ever had! The pool in front of the thatched-roofed reception/restaurant was really nice - especially at night. Between the great hospitality, the peaceful quiet location, and the cleanliness/beauty of the property, it couldn't have been better. We had a WONDERFUL time!

Room Tip: I think we had a garden room - though I'm not sure - but they are all great.
