“A great value in a serene setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

I stayed here with a friend for two nights. We arrived at night which made it hard to see the sign but luckily I had a phone card and Christina gave me accurate directions and even cooked us a delicious late dinner (chicken carbonara). It is almost a kilometer east of the coastal highway, in the small town of Portalon, with an easy to identify gate and 24 hour secure parking. The grounds are expansive, with the pool and restaurant towards the side and the bungalows spread out enough to enjoy some privacy and hear the sounds of the rainforest. It is not within walking distance of the beach, but there is a waterfall that you can walk to and swim in that is only 1 km. away.

The room itself had a comfortable bed, great water pressure and hot water, and had plenty of space for the two beds, a dresser, table, and our gear (surfboards, backpacks), and we had a porch to set stuff out to dry. The wifi was excellent around the pool and restaurant, but was inconsistent in the room. It felt very safe and nice to be in a part of Costa Rica not overrun with tourists. From there it was only a 15 minute drive to Dominical to go surfing or 30 minutes to Quepos (plus another 20 minutes to Manuel Antonio National Park, where we hiked for the day).

One final reason why I chose to stay here is because they are involved with 'Pack for a Purpose', a non-profit that helps local communities collect books/medical supplies from travelers staying at participating hotels. Overall it is a great value and off the beaten track, so you still feel like you are in the real Costa Rica.

Beautiful rooms and gardens, but I chose this place because a previous review had stated it was a few minutes walking distance to the beach and we found this to not be true. It is set in a remote location with lots of flowers (and mosquitos) but it would have been helpful to know that a taxi ride from Quepos was $30 and the bus stop was too far to walk with luggage. The food was delicious but I wish we had known the prices of what we were ordering beforehand. We cancelled the last night in the 24 hour window for a refund and did not receive a refund. It was so expensive to travel back and forth to the Palapa that we chose to spend our second night in Quepos near shuttles and restaurants. The rooms did not have air conditioning but the bed was comfortable and the rooms were clean with fresh linen and towels. I found this description on a previous review and that is why I chose to stay here, only to find out the beach was a drive, not a walk, to the eco lodge "The hotel is in a quiet rain forest property away from the main road, with gardens and public areas absolute cleaned at all times. The beach is just a few minutes away from the resort, but “the famous Playa Linda” is a real pristine paradise full of thousands of coconut trees and totally empty from any human been."

The photos were accurate except again misleading as you are made to think that wildlife such as in the photos are right there on the grounds. WIFI was very inconsistent and I could not get a connection inside the villa, I sat outside on the patio but was bitten by mosquitoes.

Had I known that it was so remote with the added expense of taxis to get to and from for meals, we would have chosen another room. Again, beautiful and clean and would make a great place for those who wanted seclusion and didn't need to get shuttles to nearby parks and activities but not recommended for a convenient place. Communication with the host before our arrival was short and not as informative as with other places we stayed.

Room Tip: We did not know what we were paying for meals I wish there had been a menu with prices so I didn'...

Very friendly and helpful owner and beautiful grounds. The bungalos are stunning, I wish I could have stayed there forever! It was such a peaceful place and easy to make day trips to Dominical or Manuel Antonio. The beaches that are close to the resort are also fantastic and practically deserted, but be sure to keep your belongings safe and don't leave them on the beach if you go into the water.

I stayed here for 3 nights and had a very nice time. Its location allows you hear all the natural sounds of the rainforest, which is really wonderful. Christina, the new owner, is very friendly and helpful.

It is about 25 minutes away from Manuel Antonio, but it's an easy drive on the highway, and there are other restaurants close by. After spending the day in M.A., I was glad to drive back to La Palapa and be away from the crowds.

Two minor complaints: the bed in the bedroom was not comfortable at all, and there is no wifi in the bungalows. The final night, I slept on one of the twin beds in the living room, which was slightly better. If they would upgrade the quality of the mattresses and have wifi available in the bungalows and not just the lobby, I'd give it 5 stars.

After seeing the good, the bad, and the ugly in terms of accommodations in Costa Rica, this place was a welcome relief! It's absolutely gorgeous, extremely well cared for (and recently updated to extremely high standards!), and was just a pleasure to stay in. We had intended to stay one day and ended up there for four because its just such a haven when you're out and about all day. The new owner is lovely and went way out of her way to make our stay enjoyable, and we wish her all the best with this beautiful Eco Lodge!

Room Tip: The bungalows are so beautiful and very spacious--they also come with fully equipped kitchens, which...

This is a beautiful property and a wonderful place to stay for a relaxing jungle retreat. Wonderfully quiet and clean, but you do need a car to get around. The owner and staff were very helpful and accommodated me as a vegetarian.

What a gorgeous property! The grounds are immaculate. The bungalows are stylish, spacious, comfortable, and very clean. The pool and the tropical gardens full of birds are heaven after a long hot day. You could get the wi-fi signal in the Bungalow, restaurant & pool area, but why would we sit in our room when we could lounge on the patio and check our emails? The hotel is in a quiet rain forest property away from the main road, with gardens and public areas absolute cleaned at all times. The beach is just a few minutes away from the resort, but “the famous Playa Linda” is a real pristine paradise full of thousands of coconut trees and totally empty from any human been. There is a small shop down the road to the resort were we bought many of our needs to take with us on our car trips. We preferred to participate during the morning in some of the hotels activities, like bird watching, rafting, canoeing and zip line and come enjoy the hotel pool or the Playa Linda beach on the afternoon. Next time I will definitely want to rent an ATV from the front desk to get out & explore the roads and mountains nearby.
What really made the La Palapa Eco lodge feel like home for us was Cristina the owner and her wonderful staff. Cristina was just super nice, answering our many questions and making great suggestions. She takes such great care of each and every guest, and her stories at the end of the day with the guests about life experiences were great for great conversations. We are until today after 11 days past in Costa Rica, talking about the delicious homemade fish soup she made for us on our last night. If this was in Toronto and if I were a food critic (we all can dream), I'd name Cristina’s restaurant "The dream in paradise".
What makes a great Hotel is one that makes you want to stay forever... My wife & I stayed at La Palapa for 9 nights, after booking 2 and that wasn't long enough. This place is truly a hidden gem in a rain forest, and the people there that make it so are part of this beautiful holiday we had in the Manuel Antonio Area in Costa Rica. We are already planning our next trip to Costa Rica because La Palapa is in our hearts, but next time we will bring my sister and her boyfriend to paradise!

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be good. Some seem to be larger than others.
