The Turtle Conservation centre is at Serangan, a tidal island near Sunur and takes about 90 minutes drive from Kuta. It is staffed by a small permanent staff, supplemented by volunteers, who come from all over the globe. At Serangan they have a number of recovery tanks where sick and injured turtles are taken. Turtles get injured by boat propellers, sharks, fishing nets and plastic bags. This is not a breeding centre but there were a number of baby turtles who had been rescued and brought to the centre. When the turtles have recovered they are released to the ocean.
This centre is not a flashy government funded showcase and its structure is functional (as are the toilets).
