Description: Monti’s La Casa Vieja est. 1871 – 140 years old and still going…. Family owned and operated for over 54 years, Monti’s offers gracious hospitality and great food at reasonable prices. Built in 1871, Monti’s La Casa Vieja (“The Old House”) has a unique western atmosphere. Originally Tempe’s founding pioneer home, Monti’s has been carefully restored to reveal foot thick adobe walls, river rock in the floors and even a fountain in one of the many large dining rooms. Guests can dine in the very room where Sen. Carl Hayden, “The most important person in Arizona history”, was born in 1877. Known for our steaks but even more known for our freshly baked roman bread – it will keep you coming back for more. Monti’s is just a few short steps from the METRO Light Rail stop in downtown Tempe.

“Monti's is one of the best places to eat in Arizona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2009

Not only is the food excellent but also is the history, for it is a 138 year old historic monument. This was one of the first buildings in Tempe, and was where the great senator Carl Hayden was born. I highly recommend the filet mignon and the famous Roman bread.
The table next to ours loved the ribs and the chocolate explosian dessert.

Food was ok but the service was just so so. The waiter wasn't aware of specials, a little bit rude, but was better toward the end.

“Vintage style, good grub, and lots of local lore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2008

Monti's La Casa Vieja is an Arizona institution.
In an ever changing landscape of urban sprawl, Monti's holds tight to its roots along the shores of the Salt River, across from the historic Hayden Mill. Note: also within walking distance to Mill Avenue shopping district, ASU, and Tempe Beach Park-- really great location.

Located in a historic adobe structure where Carl Hayden was born (the owner calls him the "most important figure in Arizona history") La Casa Vieja is just simply a really awesome place.

The menu is good, with pasta, steaks, and a good wine list. Nothing too fancy or "fusion"-- just basics, and all is reliably very good.

Old-fashioned style and service, like a place you'd have gone with your grandparents fopr special occasions as a kid. We really enjoyed ourselves there. The owner sends out a newsy and amusing e-mail every month or so and also writes a blog about life in Tempe, and happenings at Monti's. He's a Monti, and quite obviously full of love for the history of La Casa Vieja, Tempe, and local lore in general.

A classic. Don't miss it.
