Description: Caetano D'Costa encountered Chicken Cafreal in the early 80s. At the time, he was working in the kitchen of the Mandovi Hotel in Panjim, under the tutelage of a senior chef, Caridade Alfonso. Caetano D'costa's parents had a tiny tavern in a bylane of Saligao, selling cashew and palm feni distilled by a relative. His mother added homemade snacks to go along with drinks, and the little tavern immediately became a hit with the motorcycle-pilots of the region who operated a local taxi service on their bikes. They brought their customers in increasing numbers. In 1985, the then 24 year old Mr.D'Costa left his job at the Mandovi Hotel and the tavern turned into Florentine. On its menu was Chicken Cafreal. Today, this richly aromatic, long-marinated fried chicken that's smothered in a spicy, coriander- heavy sauce is ubiquitous on restaurant menus across the state and widely known across the world as a signature Goan dish. But in fact, until the 1970's, Chicken Cafreal was unknown in Goa.

“Just about ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

Was obvious that it is a popular place for locals. Just that maybe my expectations from the place was probably a bit too much after all the reviews. And also the fact that have had pleasure of some amazing food in Goa in the most obscure of shacks that the food here seemed a bit of a hype. I do not want to sound completely discouraging. The Fish Rawa fries and the Chicken Vindaloo was quite good. Have heard that Cafreal is their speciality but having had some bad experience elsewhere didnt want to risk it. Parking your vehicle near this place can be a distinct challenge and more so in the monsoon so pls factor that in.

“Awesome food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

Florentines a favourite for locals is a must visit restaurant for the finger licking Chicken Cafreal. OMG its sooo tasty , thats the reason there are more locals than tourists in this restaurant.

The service is just ok. But all the marks go for the tasty goan food they serve. The place is not a fancy. If you are going for dinner go in a early as the waiting time gets long as you go late.

Its a must visit for us on our every trip to Goa. Yummyyyy food....

“Good for chicken cafreal only”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Sells chicken calf real with poi's non stop. Every table seems to have the same for the rest on the menu can't say much. A lot of local crowd validate the fact that the chicken is really good
