“OMG!!! This is drive is a MUST!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

I don't usually use all caps in my reviews or in any of my writing, but this drive is fabulous. We drove to Sedona from the south, Scottsdale to be specific. We just happened to stop at the Red Rock Ranger Station in Coconino National Forest on 179. As has been my experience with National Park Service staff in the past, we found the most helpful volunteer who provided us with a detailed map of the entire Sedona area. He took the time to mark specific spots we should stop to enjoy the view or to hike. Everything he said was absolutely true! Without this stop, I'm sure we would have wasted our day not knowing what we were seeing.

Parking at some of the stops on this scenic drive is limited and you need a "Red Rock Pass" ($5, available at the ranger stations) is required to park and hike at most areas along SR 179. We donated $10 because we felt the information we got from the volunteer was worth way more than that. While this is a byway, you'll miss most of what this drive has to offer is you don't get out of the car and enjoy the view!

“Lovely drive, exceptional views in Sedona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

A great way to see lots of this special and scenic area. Week-ends are quite crowded, but during the week the drive was lovely and easy to manage. Don't miss it!

“Still Beautiful...but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Loved the views and if it is your first time driving it, you will find them spectacular. We were a bit disappointed because of all the new construction that we felt took away from the views. But Our first trip down, many years ago, my DH nearly drove off the road as we headed down 179 from 17 and turning around the curve that spread Sedona out in front of us was an OMG moment - the deep blue sky, the red, red rock formations, the deep green of the pines took your breath away.

“beautiful drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

So many beautiful sites to see that you have to be careful when you are driving to pay attention to the road. Took tons of pictures. The desert has its own beauty found no where else.

“Camp Verde to Sedona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

We drove from Camp Verde to Sedona and took the extra time to view the rock formations all along the way. They provide safe turnoffs for pictures and the visitor's center is a gem with all kinds of information from well informed staff. Be sure to take the very short ride to the Cathedral in the Mountains as it provides you with a unique view of the landscape as well as the Cathedral. This has to be one of the most breathtaking drives in Arizona. It is like being "in" the Grand Canyon. Morning sun is best going north.
