I was excited by all the positive reviews of this place and was still surprised. The quiet neighborhood and humble (dirt) parking area was initially disarming, but any second thoughts quickly vanished when we went through the entrance arch. The landscaping is lush and fragrant with beautiful flowers and greenery. The innkeeper was very pleasant and immediately offered us refreshments (pasta salad, fresh fruit, cookies, coffee, tea, and bottled water were available in the lobby). We were shown to our room, the Cactus Flower suite, where all the amenities were explained to us. As promised, the room smelled of fresh bread when we entered. It pained me to not just sit and relax but I wanted to get our car unloaded.
The bell hop, I believe his name was Eduardo, was waiting for me by the entrance and was very helpful with all of our stuff. My wife and I do not travel light. I was very glad to not have to carry it all up the winding staircase to our room.
Once everything was unloaded my wife and I just sat on the exceedingly comfortable sofa with a cold bottle of water from the fridge. It didn't take us long to get into the fresh bread, butter, and jams. Even this surprised me. I wasn't expecting the jam and marmalade to be imported from France or there to be a nice cutting board and large bread knife.
I am not going to add any of my own pictures since there are plenty already available. The hotel's website does have the best photos. When I initially saw the bed I was a little apprehensive because of its odd design (look at the photos, you'll know what I mean), but once you lay on it, you realize it feels more like sleeping under a tree than in a cage. It would not have been great to watch TV from bed, but we never did that anyway.
My wife was quick to indulge in the Aveda toiletries, but I was more interested in the snacks. It may seem silly to be happy about small bags of chips, pretzels, and Cheez-Its, but I always hated the feeling of being nickel-and-dimed by other hotels.
The tiled walk-in shower is more like a room. The bench is great for just sitting and enjoying the warm water. The whirl-pool tub for two is a little small for two people, unless you're both short, but it was still nice and romantic, particularly with all the lights off and the firplace going. In response to a previous review: Yes there is only a rubber plug for the tub, but I can't think of anything else that would not scratch up your legs. We didn't have a problem with the tub draining too quickly or with the water getting cold too fast.
Although it may seem crude to some, I was impressed that the separate room for the toilet did include a plunger and can of air freshener. I would rather see the plunger than have to call for someone else to fix a clogged toilet.
The dining area was beautifully set for dinner. The cozy setting for two was warm and colorful, with fresh flowers.
The walk-in pool was beautiful. I only wish it had been warmer when I went for a quick swim before the 11pm closing time. Although I was well chilled by the swim, a quick hop into the hot tub fixed that. A stop in the lobby for a couple cookies made the little trip a success even though I didn't do much swimming.
The three-course breakfast was excellent. The first course was fruit or yogurt, followed by a fresh-baked treat (I wish I could get scones like that at home), then the entree. One day we had buttermilk pancakes with chicken and apple sausage. The next day was spinach omelets with pork sausage. While the menu was pre-determined, the waitstaff\inn-keepers asked if there was anything else we would like. The table next to us asked for and received bacon instead of sausage.
On our last day my wife had a massage in their spa, which she absolutely loved. She highly recommends it.
Overall I feel like the inn-keepers considered every detail of our stay. I wish I could find a place like this for every travel destination.
If I had to find some negative aspects of our stay, I would say that the shower area being so large was not quick to warm up and that most of the dishes were not microwave safe so it was a little difficult reheating some of the dinner left-overs.
I'm not a huge fan of the Sedona area itself, but I do look forward to returning just for this hotel.
