“very nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Great hotel with nice large rooms, baths and beds. Super patio and pools galore. Play golf, hike , bike and enjoy the sun. Hotel has underground parking (your car stays cooler) and is located at the base of camelback mountain.

I came here for a conference. Even with a conference discount, this Starwood property was definitely a high-priced resort. That being said, service was fantastic. We took a cab into the property, and the bellhop immediately took our luggage and delivered it to the room. Check-in was smooth. Our room was slightly dated (worn out sofa, carpet, wall studs), but still elegant. Complementary shoe shine was offered, and turn-down service was standard. The bathroom had high-end furnishings.

The pools were well-maintained, and had attentive pool service. I used the complementary bike rental to tour the property, and rode downtown. It was very convenient. The property also was within walking distance to Camelback mountain trail head, so hiking was available if you wanted to do more than lounging. There is also a cactus garden, and standard resort mallshops.

The Spa was also fantastic. I didn't use any services, only the facilities. There was a hot tub, sauna, shower, and a lounging area with complementary teas, coffees, and fruits.

We also dined at Il Terrazzo--overall, service was a good, but slow. The tiramisu dessert was underwhelming (tasty, but not spectacular).

I am a Starwood Preferred Plus member (ie: no status, only the SPG credit card).

I was disappointed in this hotel as I had quite high expectations after reading the reviews and seeing the ranking. The price exceeded the quality. I would highly recommend to anyone The Boulders, a Waldorf Astoria Resort in place of this hotel. It is not super near by, but it is so worth the 20 minute drive. I paid less for the Boulders and had an exceptional experience.

My wife and I stayed here over a discounted summer staycation. Since it was August and blistering hot there were not many people here but that was ok with us because it made it more private. I would have given this resort 5 stars it it weren't for a few things that made our stay not as comfortable.

Check-in was fast and simple and we were celebrating our anniversary and was upgraded to a nicer room. Kudos to them for that customer service act. We also had a nice dinner at J & G steakhouse making it our number 2 steakhouse in Phoenix, just being edged out by Mastro's City Hall. Having turndown service was also a nice touch, but is mandatory for a 5 star resort. The room we got was a king that had a nice bathroom with both tub and shower. The room was spacious and had a desk and couch as well as a balcony where you can sit out and look over the grounds. The resort itself is beautiful and well kept.

The few little things that dropped them half a star are as follows. The hot tub was broken and not addressed during our two day stay. The water was only at 90 degrees and the jets did not work in it. The hot tub itself is large and the only one on the resort. I would have expected a resort of this size to have two of them, but this was plenty large enough. The only problem was that it did not work and repeated attempts to report this to the front desk brought about no one to address the problem.

There was also construction that took place outside our bedroom that was loud an obnoxious and could have been avoided. I'm assuming that the resort is aware of the construction going on seemed to take place on one side of the resort. There are two wings to the resort and a simple placement of guests on the otherside would have avoided this problem. It sure made our anniversary staycation a little annoying and sleeping in virtually impossible. Since it was summer, and the lack of visual guests around the property, I'm sure there were many rooms available on the other side of the resort that could have been used.
They also missed turndown service on our second night, which was more of a missed service than actual inconvenience.

The resort is very romantic and would make a great getaway. Despite the small short-comings, we would still return here and give it another try. The only big things were the hot tub and construction. They have a nice sunday brunch and afternoon tea that we were not able to take advantage during this stay and we'll just have to try them next time.

Visited here in Late May for a conference with my family. Be sure to request a room close to the pool if you plan on spending time there. It could be a long walk otherwise. Rooms need updating but have been well kept and although boring were fairly well done back in the day. romantic they are not. The pools are large and quite nice. The mother of pearl pool is very nice and the cabanas are fabulous with great service. If children were not allowed by this pool I am not sure we would return. although the kids loved the other pools as they had a grouping of boards they ran across for hours and a slide the "family" area is while large and clean is rather drab an unimaginative with poor towel and food service. so call ahead to ensure children will be welcome at the m of pearl pool if you have kids in tow and prefer a nice pool with good service.

Food was good and fairly priced but nothing memorable.
The kids club was good and the boys enjoyed it.
Tennis lessons were loved by the kids and my wife.
Service all around was good and prompt, concierge was excellent and hooked us up with the best tour guide ever! David from my arizona tour guide. Wow! The best.

The food and convention spaced was excellent. A fabulous place to hold a large meeting.

Room Tip: Close to the pool or prepare for a hike.

Thank you for sharing your experience at The Phoenician. It sounds like you were able to take some time during your conference to enjoy many of our Resort wide activities and amenities. We always enjoy hearing that our guests had fun! We also take notice of those areas we could improve upon. Our rooms are scheduled to have a full renovation next year. We hope you can return again soon – for business or pleasure, or both!

I love this hotel! I have stayed here with my family for years and no doubt will be returning again next year, even the manager calls it our second home! From where we live its about an 11 hour flight but when we arrive its worth it. All of the staff remember us which is a lovely, the truly do go the extra mile. The pools are stunning, the restaurants are beautiful and the view of camelback mountain is spectacular. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Casitas are my favourite as they are beautiful and close to the pool, spa and gym.

Luxury 5 star with everything you'd expect. Rooms were excellent and the pool was huge and crystal clear. Staff at the pool were attentive and brought iced water without prompting. The grounds were beautifully maintained and i liked the complimentary starbucks in the reception area in the morning. Lovely hotel with not a hair out of place.

Location very convenient for local attractions - zoo, botanical gardens, fashion square.
