“Desert oasis with mountain views. Relax and refresh.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

My spouse had a business trip, but it was all relaxing for me. We stayed in a casita, down the hill from the lobby and main hotel buildings. Very quiet and close to the golf clubhouse and spa. The pools were beautiful and the adults only pool kept the splashing and noise to the kiddies at the waterslide and other pools. This is a beautifully manicured property about 30 minutes drive from the Phoenix airport. It is a bit on the older side, but the main evidence of that was some dated wallpaper. A few of the standout features of our room were a true walk-in closet with a separate overhead light, a dimmer switch for the bathroom lights, and great furniture on the deep balcony with thick cushions on the chairs and chaise. The view of Camelback Mountain from our balcony was the icing on the cake. The walking paths throughout the property and cactus garden are a unexpected addition to the usual resort hotel experience.

Room Tip: If parking is important to you, the casitas had parking just outside the rooms, literally steps away...

This is a fabulous resort! We had no complaints during our 4 night stay...The food is so fresh and the services are second to none. Grounds are amazing and quite tropical. We just love this place! Another fun thing to do is to climb camel back mountain located right behind the resort! well worth the effort. And don't forget to get their signature ice cream " Phoenician Crunch"

Room Tip: spend the extra money and purchase the grand deluxe room.

I'd always wanted to try the Phoenician - as a spa destination. I was surprised when my company named it as our incentive trip. The grounds are beautiful and perfectly manicured. I didn't golf but those who did said it was wonderful. Our room was in the casita. Easily accessible and had a lovely view of the fountains in the lake. Food was decent. (We were eating in mass scale, not the restaurants). Service was good from front desk, lounge and lobby bar. Housekeeping didn't show until after 2:30 one day and we'd already been out and come back. There was a layer of dust in several areas of the bathroom. Everything in the room was in good working order except the vanity makeup mirror in the bathroom, which should have lit up but wouldn't. I guess the bulb was blown. It remained that way so I guess housekeeping never checked it. The pools are delightful. The staff is extremely attentive - if you ask where something is, they don't tell you, they take you....Signature 5 star service. If I was a spa guest, seeking a retreat, I'd not have been happy with the corporate crowd overtaking the lobby bar. But there were other lounge areas in more quiet places and my little group managed to escape to the steakhouse lounge, which was incredibly beautiful and on the top floor with a deck with firepits overlooking the pools and gold course. Very tranquil. It's a stunning place and I'd consider it a "must see" for any true traveler. I'd stay in the casitas again. There are parking spaces just outside the doors to the rear of the casitas - perfect if you have a vehicle. On another note, when we checked in, we were told that in order to have our reserved room (a king) we'd need to take a an accessible room (handicapped, For the politically incorrect) or a double in the casitas. The casitas sounded better and people in the main hotel said they though the casitas were the superior option, but when I reserve a king at a 5 star resort, I expect to get what I reserved.....Not a compromise that I need to negotiate at check in. I get sick of hotels making me negotiate my room at check in. The double was a mistake. When you are used to a king, you need to sleep in a king, IMO. . At minimum, I'd like what I reserved.
Also, don't go without a fat wallet ( not that you would anyway). Cocktails were $20 each. Each time the two of us sat at the bar, it was $100 with tip. Be ready for that. The drinks are well made and they are generous with pours. I was drinking French Martinis - very well done. Overall, is return, stay in the casitas (in a king!) and spend more time in the spa. I also thought the spa was small and I would have expected more quiet areas/hydro retreat...maybe a plunge pool and some aromatherapy....a place to escape and relax before or after a treatment.

The Phoenician is a lovely property, but take a bundle of cash for ANY extra charge you can imagine and be prepared for surprises. A regular cup of carry-out coffee is more than $4.00, oatmeal is $9, you are charged for "porterage" even if you never see a porter and wheel in your own bag, and despite the high-end rack rate, you are charged on top of that for housekeeping, which, for us, one day did not happen at all and another day we had to request it since past 2 PM, it did not look like it was going to happen for the second day in a row. Then to add to our comedy of errors, we received three phone calls over the course of two nights AFTER we had gone to sleep, all between midnight and 2:30 AM with no one on the other end of the line, just music. I feel badly I had to explain my disappointment to such a nice young lady at the desk, but though this place is indeed beautiful, it needs a lot of work behind the scenes.

Room Tip: Ours was quiet, bathroom was gorgeous, but the room itself was dark and did not have a view.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. As a AAA Five Diamond resort, The Phoenician is committed to the highest service standards, based on an unprecedented attention to detail. We are disappointed that this was not your experience, and have shared your feedback with our housekeeping team to ensure our operational integrity. We also regret the inconvenience caused by your guestroom phone issues, the result of a systems error that was addressed and rectified as quickly as possible. While a luxury property, The Phoenician does offer complimentary services such as morning coffee to-go in the Il Terrazzo restaurant, and shuttle service to/from Scottsdale Stadium during Spring Training. Numerous resort activities, such as a self-guided audio tour of our $25 million art collection; and a guided tour of our two-acre Cactus Garden, are also complimentary. We hope you will provide us with the opportunity in the near future to demonstrate to you the true, personalized service and signature offerings for which The Phoenician is known.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location with many amenities and lovely service. What's not to like? We really enjoyed our stay here. My only objection is that there is free wi-fi only in the lobby. When even the most budget hotels offer free wi-fi in the guest rooms, you should certainly get the same convenience at a luxury hotel that charges luxury prices.

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay. As a benefit to guests, we have bundled our most popular services in one convenient Resort Charge. While this charge is not mandatory, it is an excellent value for those that plan to utilize all our resort has to offer. Included for just $29.00 is Wi-Fi, fitness center access, free use of our mountain bikes, unlimited local and long distance calls, 50% off fitness center classes, complimentary tennis court access and equipment rentals. Of course you can pay individually for all these services but internet and fitness center access alone makes the resort charge a great deal. We hope to welcome you back in the near future.

We returned to the Phoenician to check out the area in March (having repeatedly stayed there in November). We were pleased again with the Scottsdale weather (dry, warm) and have to confirm once again that The Phoenician never ceases to please with its variety of services and, most especially, service. The staff is extremely customer service oriented and went out of their way to accommodate our requests, including a return to a favorite room location.

The grounds are immaculate, rooms are extremely comfortable and well-maintained, pool very comfortable with attentive staff.

Couldn't be more pleased and plan to return when we can.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main hotel facing the pool. Views are best.
