“SmokeTree in December”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

-It was nice to have a suite with a separate living room. Living room and bedrooms were good size. Very small closet in living room. No closet in bedroom. Good WiFi connection throughout.
-Pleasant to look out of room and see greenery instead of a parking lot or large buildings.
-Room was very clean.
-The bathroom was on the small size with some peeling paint, but no big deal.
-The beds were very comfortable and overall the place was very quiet. Thick walls, so not much noise from neighbors.
- The location was great. Lincoln and Scottsdale Road. Right on the border of Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. You can walk everywhere.
- Staff was very nice.

- This is not a "resort." No restaurant. Small fitness room with free rental bicycles. No spa or other amenities one associates with a "resort." Pleasant place anyway, but the label is a bit misleading.
- This is not the hotel's fault, but we were jolted out of bed on Tues and Wed morning by the sound of the dumpsters being emptied (and perhaps other work going on) at the medical facility next door at 6:00 am. We were told it was only on Tuesday mornings but it happened, for a shorter time, on Wed morning also. The owner said he's spoken to the city about it, but to no avail. We were in the double-queen suites which were the closest units to the noise. It was more jolting than usual since the place is so incredibly quiet otherwise and conducive to deep sleep.

Room Tip: Away from the medical buildings or other possible sources of morning noise.

I had stayed at the Smoketree years ago when in town for a wedding. I discovered it was also pet friendly (NO pet fee!) so booked a suite for a trip to visit relatives who live in Scottsdale. Considering it's in Paradise Valley, the $110/night rate was very reasonable. No restaurant on-site, but easy walk to upscale AJ's food store/deli. Free WIFI, flat screen in living room, very comfy beds & pillows. Perfect locale and staff was very friendly. Great customer service -- they shipped me the magnifying mirror I left stuck on the bathroom mirror! Nice shady trees, green grass and gardens...too cool to use pool, but it looked very inviting! I will definitely return to Smoketree again and again!

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to have great view and access to grounds. All are ground level with patio doors op...

Raves for the Smoke Tree! Everything about it shines. We didn't feel like customers, we felt like guests. Simple luxury: huge old trees, a sparkling pool, attentive staff, immaculate rooms and grounds. The desk guy who welcomed us took the time to show us to our room, and pointed out the pair of owls that roost in the big trees on the property; he is quite knowledgeable about local birds and plants. There are bird feeders all around the grounds and lots of native birds.
There is a fabulous grocery store (AJs) a 3 minute walk away that supplied us with breakfast and hot dinner that we enjoyed on our patio. We didn't use the bikes available, but they looked like they are well maintained and there are helmets. We enjoyed the pool and the bocce court.
The property is mid-century classic, lovingly maintained. Peaceful, private, beautiful, friendly, convenient, fun, comfortable. A sweet place. Thank you Smoke Tree!

We stayed at this wonderful hotel for one night during a tour throughout the western states. As we had some problems with the rented car and needed to change it, I called the Smoketree Resort to let them know that we were running late. They were so friendly and when we arrived, they even asked how everything worked out. The bungalow that we got was super clean, very nice and comfy appointed. We had a living room with kitchen area, a separated bedroom, a walk-in closet and a bathroom - just so much room for the both of us. The a7c worked fine and the windows kept every noise from outside away. It had a bit of a 50s charme to it, but in a good way.
Our bungalow also had not only a private parking lot right next to the front door, but also a private patio and backyard, which we relly enjoyed. We also saw a BBQ outside, but as for the rainy weather we did not use it.

The TV was not working and so the guy that showed us our room also fixed it right away - even though it was after 8pm. He also recommended some good restaurants and a supermarket nearby, which was very helpfull.

We would definately stay in the Smoketree Resort again, it is a great Hotel and so much more cozy than all the big Hotels in Scottsdale.

The room looked great on arrival. Quite homely and comfortable. The man on reception was pleasant and friendly.
It wasn't until I had a shower that I realised how utterly disgusting a repulsive this place was (see my pics)
The shower smelt like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. There was plenty orange and brown scum around the taps and drain as well as the head off the last guests razor!
The tap nozzle in the bathroom sink was caked with mould and fungus and probably hepatitis, I uploaded a lovely pic of this for u to see.
Used plastic cutlery covered in food from previous guests left on kitchen bench which leads me to believe that they.only made our bed after last guests departed.
Bathroom walls covered in what looked like dry urine or bodily fluids. DO NOT STAY HERE... I FEEL DIRTY JUST THINKING ABOUT IT

STmanager, Manager at SmokeTree Resort & Bungalows, responded to this review, October 12, 2012
Perfect daily housekeeping and guest room cleanliness is a top priority here at the SmokeTree. With a highly trained staff of only three room attendants, each having worked here for over four years, we are very good and consistent at this. The overwhelming number of reviews shown below all enforce this standard. Further, each room is double checked by the Manager on Duty before every arrival and so we dispute this review. We challenge it’s validity and consider it to be deceptive. Our website shows detailed pictures of the rooms and they will look just like that when you start your enjoyable visit to Scottsdale and the SmokeTree.

At first, you think the place is closed and run-down, but behind the dark entrance, you find a little treasure.
This place was the best thing to end our big trip of the south west: calm, nice rooms (suites), beautifull grounds...relax and enjoy!
